I''ll set the stage, 3.30-3.50ct ish RB, platinum, maybe diamonds on the head (saw it on Pearlman''s site)

3-sided diamond shank, not too thin

Side stones - duh? I love traps, all the others are just ok. Need PS''er''s suggestions

Ring size 5 - 51/4. Would there be room for side stones?

With a diamond shank, I would say no side diamonds.

Now with a plain shank, I would do baguettes in a heartbeat. Sooo gorgous and classic

I would agree. A diamond shank and a stone that large really wouldn''t need side stones.

Do you have a stone in mind or are you just gathering ideas?

Yes, I would agree with this as well. Too busy, I think.

I have to agree. But if you love your traps as I know you do, go for a less busy setting. Good luck!!!

With tha size center stone I would almost say just a solitaire.

But I do love sidestones too. With a round, I like rounds, tapered baguettes, or pears. I don''t think I''m seen too many rounds with the trapezoids. I like trapezoids with square or rectangular stones.

Ok, you guys all say no side stones with a 3-sided shank, but what about all those Beaudry''s, Jack Kelege, Gregg Ruth designs that have a large center stone, side stones AND diamond shank?

Yeah, I know the traps will not work with a round.Dang it! Hubby is saying just get the thing, I am paralyzed by way too much indecision. If it''s big, perfectly cut, great color and clarity, show it to me!

How about something like this?

Actually, I might be in the minority here, but I love traps with a round center. This is one of my favorites...

You know, Ann, we of the NorCal GTG saw an amazing ring at Darren McClung''s last Friday: it had a haloed cushion center with STEP-CUT half-moon sidestones. It was such a stunning look....I had never seen step-cut half moons before and it was very evocative of trap sides, except for the half-moon shape of course.

I think they would look great with a large round.

You''re right that Michael Beaudry made his fortune with 3-sided pave shanks with halos with sidestones with pave around the basket and every other kind of ornamentation you can think of....all on one ring. I think it''s a lovely look -- Art Nouveau was wearing an incredible haloed (HUMONGOUS) white radiant by Michael Beaudry and I think it also had sidestones and pave all over. It was very intricate and detailed....and it looked perfect on her. I think it really depends on your personal style. Some people adore the elaborate Art Deco look, and others prefer something simpler. I like both but personally could not pull off a Michael Beaudry since I dress like a schlep (jeans, flip flops, t-shirt usually). Do you plan to wear this ring as an e-ring or as a RHR?

Ann:

Are you set on having a pave band? It seems to me the pave would get lost on your small fingers, behind the big RB.

I love RBs with sidestones, pears, traps, bags, almost anything but straight-sided trills, for some reason.

I''m sure you''ve seen this, but it''s so fabulous it''s worth posting again...KristyDarling''s RB honker w/ pear sides by Leon Mege on her tiny 3.5 fingers!!!!

I got to see this IRL Friday....was blown away that so much bling could be so delicately mounted....yum..

ann, sure there are lots of beautiful beaudry's out there, is that the look you want? if so, go for it.

but personally i think with a stone that size, don't get 3 sided melee and side stones. to me that's too much....BUT if you are a little older i think that you could probably carry it off. i don't feel like i personally could wear something like that, sure i'd love to try it on!!! but to wear something that bold and strong and large, i'd feel like i had to be older...kind of like how some people say they don't like seeing large stones on young girls. certain things just feel right or wrong etc.

in the end you are going to wear the stone so do what you will!!! but i think a 3c stone with sides can stand on it's own just like a 3c stone with 3 sided pave can!

oh and that half moon flanked cushion we saw? just divine!!!!!!!! i think it had nothing but the halo'd cushion (halo'd in pink diamonds by the way) with the side half moons and then a simple thin solitaireish shank. yum.

Yep, that cushion was gorgeous.

My 2 cents. I don''t like traps with rounds. I prefer baguettes with them; it just seems like a cleaner, more classic look.

Ah, that ring you guys saw sounds so yummy.

I am so indecisive, I would consider an RB, Cushion, EC , Oval and maybe a stunning Radiant.
Now how do you please someone that is that much all over the map!! Would it be easier to find a very well cut, ideal, RB, than to deal with all the fancy cut trade offs? I never thought I''d consider a RB, but I just want to get this over with.

I have seen the step cut half moons, on a Beaudry, I think a year or so ago. But I like stretched out half moons, not the
tight semi-circles. Geez.

Girls, I am 51, so yes, I can wear any amount of bling I want, I''ve earned it! Ha ha. Help!

I love the pears like KD''s stunner. I also think half moons could be really pretty, as long as the balance is right. Step cuts with a brilliant could look cool. I also have seen shield and kite shapes, again, proportions need to be right...all good choices!

What have you tried on, and which shapes did you like best?

Sounds to me that you need a few more trips to the jeweler before you make a decision! I know the temptation to just get a round is strong since they''re so available, but for a ring of that size I think you need to take some time to really be sure of what you want. Get your dream ring and don''t settle, you deserve it!

hey - how do they mount these step moons anyway??

I would think just next to the center with prongs, in a basket that holds the center and the two sides, would be the easiest...like any three stone ring! really neat!

Hi Ann,

I have seen your posts on Pricescope about looking for a perfect big diamond ring since the fall of 2004. The prices for big diamonds and preciious metals have gone up quite a bit since then. Whatever shape you decide on, I''m sure you can come up with a great design. As for side stones, I like traps with radiant or other square or rectangular shapes, but not with rounds. For rounds, baguettes are the most classic. If you prefer something more unusual, half moons, pears, bullets or long shields would work. As already mentioned by others, I think Kristydarling''s round 3-stone ring with the pear sides, is a perfect example. A halo with a 3.5+ stone is not too much if you like it. Personally, I do not like a round halo on a big round stone, but a cushion shaped halo looks good. That''s what I did with my 2.45 round.

Good luck to your search and I hope you find your perfect ring soon!

Art Nouveau, if I had the difficult decision of choosing one person''s jewelry box to keep, it would be yours. I fell in love with that Beaudry ring you had made with your recut diamond, and I love the pictures of that yellow diamond ring from the GTG thread, not to mention the pink sapphire pieces. I don''t even have places to SEE that kind of jewelry where I live, much less buy them! Anyway, I just wanted you to know that it is always a special treat to get to see one of your beautiful pieces!

Everyone is being so helpful. I really wish I could pack you all up, head to NYC, and let''s get this done. My head has been swimming for yes, years about this. I''ve gone through periods of oh, just forget it, to I''m going right now. My best friend I know is sick of hearing about it. My husband says go do it. But it is me who cannot decide.
My inital love was a Beaudry. I saw it here in Houston. It was a 5ct EC, with traps and a diamond band. Scrumptious. But over priced (I thought) and some of the stones didn''t look too hot at closer inspection. I knew he would change them out, if I asked. Then 9-11 hit, and hubby''s business slowed way down. I wouldn''t dare spend that much cash, too selfish. In the meantime, I have been learning so much here and loving every new ring I saw! But, yes, AN, is right on target with me. Great memory by the way!
Later, I discovered cushions through Beaudry. He showed me a few and that did it. But I want rectangular, no culet and it is just not out there. Mark @ ERD has looked and the pickings were slim to none. I look at rings every where I go. But it is always the same ol'' stuff. Houston is just ok, when it comes to that. I know I''ll have to go to NYC, but it scares me I''ll get there, and just fall in love with a design and buy the thing. Whatever I end up with, I want as close to perfect as budget can afford. AN is so right about the pricing. It is almost unfathomable how much diamonds have increased since I began this journey. Either I get a smaller (3ct) stone or I increase my budget.
I really want to get off stick and get something rolling. I think I''d be satisfied with any shape now, as long as it is big and a great cut.
Geez, it''s all ya''lls fault!! Too many gorgeous stones here!

Love the shank on the ring, that is what I mean by 3-sided.

Ann, sounds like you really love the look of the beaudry, so why not get just get one? I''ve heard he will make some adjustments to custom pieces so you could probably get in everything you could dream of. Have you ever spoken with Bill Pearlman? You might think of calling him and talking to him about what you are after. He is very friendly and patient. He doesn''t list stones but has more than you''d guess in stock. It''d at least be worth checking into.

Ohhh- that is a GORGEOUS ring. Mrssalvo!!

Ann- I remember all of your posts too on trying to find the perfect cushion! After all of this time, I would hate to see you just decided abruptly on something just because you want to be done with this project. Keep looking till you really find something you are in love with. As far as a round with traps, I have never really seen that, but I LOVE a round with pear sides like KristyDarling''s.... I also love a 3 stone EC- but Ec''s are my favorite, so I am biased...

Keep looking, you will find something you love, just dont settle. I am sure whatever you end up with will be GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!
