Hi Folks,

I found this stone yesterday, which ticks some of my boxes. I just want a ring of a reasonable size which looks good. The seller says 'The diamond is free from Brown or milkyness and is eye clean'. They are also happy for me to take delivery of the loose stone for a look and return for mounting or refund. The price is 2000 GBP or 3160 USD. They have provided the following image, which I would really like an opinion on:

Numbers are fine and pic looks fine, and the pic looks to match the listed proportions fine to my eyes.

If it checks your boxes I think you're good to go, just be sure to get all return/upgrade/etc. policies in writing in case you don't like it when you receive it/it's not eye-clean for you..

Looks good- but just to cover yourself I would get a return policy in writing.

Hi Folks,

Many thanks for your suggestions. Although it is very easy to import stones into the United Kingdom, we have to pay 20% tax when they get here. So, the comparative USA price for the stone I have listed is actually 2560 USD. This probably sounds a bit more reasonable now for a 0.74 ct when looking in the USA ?

After your suggestions, I have today ordered the loose stone for inspection and expect it here next Tuesday. I have it in writing there will be no problem with returns. I will also go into Hatton Garden in London, to visit the same dealer this Saturday to view some other stones (In case the ordered stone is not as expected when it arrives on Tuesday) and also to see some mounts.

I am hoping that by getting the loose stone delivered to home, it will give me a chance to view it in a few different light conditions. I will now order a 10x loupe so I can get a good look at it when it arrives.

If any of you have any suggestions what to look out for when I inspect this stone myself, I'd be most greatful.

I am finding the whole process very interesting. I'l keep you posted on my progress.

You are all very kind for sparing your time to educate this budding novice :twirl:

Definitely the best thing you can do, period. I would say don't even bother worrying about louping it - just make sure it's spotlessly clean and walk around with it in a variety of lighting types - in sunlight by a window, in diffuse office lights, in "mixed" lights in the hallway/bathroom... see if you like the way it looks up-close and at arm's length, see if you see inclusions face-up or when you're tilting it as if you're wearing it on the finger and if you do, decide whether you'll be okay with what you're seeing long-term. Then get your fingers over it and get it grubby with skin oils, and take it back through those same types of lights and see what you think - stones are never perfectly clean in day to day wear, and also inclusions are often more visible in dirty stones.

Of course - one thing to note - it's your responsibility while it's in your hands, unless you get insurance for the viewing period or something (I don't even know if you could) so... just be careful, yeah? ::) close sink plugs and put towels on hard surfaces underneath before taking it out, probably don't want to take it outside, know where it is if you take it anywhere...

Good luck - let us know what you think!!

Hi Folks,

Well, the stone arrived in a little black box with glass top. I have carried it around in my pocket at work for three days now, looking at the stone in all sorts of lighting conditions, from the office lighting, to outside, to inside department stores and even in front of a few jewelers windows in the town to compare to what's on show. Everyone I have shown it to has been surprised how sparkly it is and also comments on the size, as most people tend to have around 0.5 ct here in the UK. It is most certainly eye clean, just as the supplier advised.

I had already ordered a 30x loupe, so I have also had a go at spotting and plotting the inclusions I see. Until I familiarized myself with twinning wisp inclusions, I actually thought I'd scratched the stone somehow, but now I understand what I see. They appear like scratches which are opaque white in colour. The following drawing shows what I see:

I have rotated the drawing to be on the same rotation as the photo. I believe I have done this correctly, as you can see disturbances on the photo in the same places I have plotted the wisps. (Around the 12 O'Clock to 1 O'Clock position).

I want to keep the stone, the only thing which concerned me slightly is the fact that the wisps come right out to the girdle. Does anyone have an opinion on wisps which do this ? Should I just get the stone mounted or should I get this checked out further ?

Thank you all for your help.

Regards,

Paul
