SI1 grade, but I can see an inclusion?

It says on GIA's definition of SI1/SI2: SI1 is the lowest grade with flaws often invisible to the naked eye. SI2 inclusions are usually visible to the naked eye, although they will require close inspection.

My diamond has one tiny tiny black inclusion that I can see if I flip the loose stone over and look closely at it (5-6" away, I have good eyesight).

I'm wondering if this is a reasonable inclusion to find in an SI1 stone?

Diamond clarity is graded from the top. You can find inclusions in the sides/bottoms of somes VS2 stones.

Absolutely. SI1 stones are not always eyeclean and that is why I always tell people to ask the vendor if the stone is eyeclean from the top and sides. I have had a black spec visible on the side of a VS2 as well. With VS1..nothing!

I still consider this stone eye-clean because it's next to impossible to find the inclusion from the top. I can find it from the side because I know where it is because of GIA cert.

I found another option without the small inclusion, but I don't think it meets my cut specifications as closely, so I think I'm still too happy with the performance of my diamond to think of returning because of the inclusion.

My only concern is taking it in to an appraiser and having it appraise as a SI2 because of that inclusion. If that happened, what am I supposed to do?

The only grade that counts is the one on the GIA paperwork.

i'd keep the stone if it is "eye clean" + "mind clean" to your satisfaction ... ;))
