I suppose it depends on your definition of eye-clean and whether that stone passes your requirements. In theory I suppose you could have a suitable SI1/2 but it al depends on the stone.
No, I am just sort of looking around at this point. My anniversary is in a few months and I am leaning towards an emerald or radiant cut. I am tempted to go lower in clarity and color to get a larger size. I am just worried that it will show up in an emerald cut.
Sorry I missed the bit about colour. I think that colour is the first to show and I would not go very low in a fancy cut without flour. Even in I''s+ I would want flour to counter any colour. But it will depend on the individual stone. Same with the clarity.
I would instruct a few vendors with your requirements and price and see what they come back with? It is certainly worth a shot!
SI grades are seldom eye-clean in ECs. It''s worth a shot, but I personally have not yet seen an eye-clean SI-grade EC. As far as color goes, I really wouldn''t go for any warmer than a G as ECs really show color. Because ECs don''t have the same scintillation and brilliance as RBs, for example, your eye picks up more color and more impurities. I would check some out in person, if you can, and see what works for you.
KB...you know I love you but my stone is a J and you really can''t see a lot of warmth in it at all. I think finding a nicer lower color EC may be a lot better than an SI1. Of course I have a bias though...
Emeraldlover,
is the avatar your ring? It is GORGEOUS!!
I just posted a picture of my lost wedding ring that I am considering having remade. I would like to have a larger EC put on it but am unsure if it would look okay.
It really is hard to tell color in pics but I promise you I can''t see it in person. Even my mom looked at it and couldn''t believe how sparkly it was or that it was a J. I have to say that i am a fanatic about cleaning it though.
2bc...how come I have never seen your ring before? I love your setting but I wonder how much would have to be changed to fit a larger diamond to fit in that setting? Are the bands attached? The fluidity of your setting flows because of the size of your current stone. My concern would be that it would change drastically if you added a bigger diamond.
It's important to remember that clarity grading is based on presence of imperfection- as opposed to visibility of imperfection.
It's true, some step cut diamonds graded VS1 have eye visible imperfection!
On the other hand there are emerald cut Si2 or even I1 diamonds that are eye clean.
It all depends on where the imperfection is, and the nature of the imperfection.
Sometimes a facet actually hides an imperfection.
I think your plan is a good one 2babycarrots!
If you can find a well cut diamond you love, J-K-L- it really depends on you.
If you find a KSi2 that you love, you'll really be able to "up-size", and the visual effect- to you- may be minimal.
PS- it's really opinion- but I personally love stones in the lower color ranges.
I've found that many other people do as well.
I've seen two eye clean step cuts in the SI range. They DO happen, but they are rare. Still, they are possible.
Now as to color. I have an F... I like anything higher, G and H are good with me too and actually have figured out that in Asschers I like warmth too, J-K-L in antique type settings. They fit. I's are nice to. LOL. But I don't like EC's as much unless they are H and above. Weird, but true.
Basic point is... go see some very nice step cuts (royal asschers are a great place to start) and see what your personal color tolerence is.
if your calling stones in forget about si anything in an EC.
If you find a good si in stock someplace with enough information then consider it.
Having si EC's called in is a losing proposition.
I agree with Storm- trying to buy an emerald cut blind off a list is bad news- especially if it''s an SI stone- but I believe it''s bad news to buy any diamond blind- even a D Flawless.
The idea that an Si emerald cut is automatically not eye clean- or even that a huge percentage of them are not eye clean- is painting with too broad a brush.
Remember that there''s a real difference between buying a diamond from a dealer that can assess the diamond to buying one from a list with no photos- in many cases the list sellers themselves does not even know what the stone looks like.
BUT- if a reliable dealer that stocks diamonds wants to choose and stock eye clean SI emerald cuts- they certainly exist.
If WF ( for example) stocks a diamond, it''s not going to appear on these blind db lists.
The ones that are not purchased by dealers end up on lists- which would make it more likely that the SI emerald cut being sold blind are not eye clean.
But it''s really a mistake IMO to believe that''s the case in a broader sense.
