I''m going through the whole 18K white gold vs. platinum debate for my e-ring. Besides durability and not having to re-plate gold, I''m trying to make sure that I''d also prefer the LOOK of platinum. I''m still trying to justify the extra cost.....(If it matters, its the BGD "Grace" setting.)

I''ve not seen them side by side yet.

Does the white gold appear more silvery/whitish whereas the platinum appears more of a grey?

If anyone has any pics of 18K white gold next to platinum, I''d appreciate the comparison.

Thanks!

You really need to go see them side by side and compare metals. Cameras and computer screens make colors appear not exactly what they seem in RL.

That said, from looking at my platinum DBTY and my WG pendant, the platinum looks much more steely than the WG.

I recently had this dilemma also - initially my e-ring was going to be WG with a platinum mount for the solitaire, and then I changed my mind and so the whole thing will be platinum.

The key thing for me was the look of each metal as it ages. Platinum does get a patina on it which is greyish, but white gold fades to a grey I find really unattractive, just much more drab. I can''t see myself getting a ring replated or repolished every 6 months or a year over its lifetime, and I preferred the steely colour of the platinum, so that was it.

Ditto MC - you really need to get out and look in person, the lighting and the patina really change the appearance.

Here are some pics - from palm to knuckle plat (irid 1.6mm) plat (irid 3mm) 18kwg (4mm) sterling (3mm)

Thanks for the pics yssie and you''re both right....I''ll have to see them in person bc in a pic, they all look the same to me.

I''ve found that plat looks "softer" the more you wear it.. as it gets dings and scratches on it, the metal stays pure white (icy white

) and instead of a sharp reflection in the ring, you get a more diffused look.

WG can be re-plated, and therefore can keep the same shine from almost day 1.... almost but can yellow some as the rhodium is coming off.
