Hey strangers!

I''m back finally.......I went to an event last night and the woman across the table from me had on the biggest RB I''ve ever seen in person! She said it was a 4.5 carat. That thing didn''t shine or sparkle or gleam at all. It looked like dirty glass. The sheer size of it caught my attention.

I don''t know if it wasn''t real or it was dirty or what. Could a poor cut do that? I''m not using the right lingo here, but you know when look down into a diamond and you can see glitters and facets? This one had none, dull as doorknob. Any thoughts?

Soooooo disappointed to see that......

well, I''d guess that the cut was poor.

I was shopping on Wednesday at a very fine jewelry store and tried on several RB stones over 3 carats (one was a 5 carat!) and they were the Lazare diamonds-- ideal cut. TONS of sparkle and brilliance from them. They were huge and blinding!

I probably shouldn''t say this, but over 3 cts looked too big on my hand.

Too big on me too.....

Maybe not an asscher.......

It''s good to know that big ones should sparkle. Just in case I start to want one! I did actually see a huge pear once and I remember it being beautiful. So this one surprised me.

Well, I am hoping for a 2ct (as my 10 year upgrade this year). But the 3ct looked really, really lovely... for the 20 year maybe?

Those Lazare diamonds were gorgeous.

The 5 carat was massive and covered the entire width of my finger-- I wear a 3.5. It was very fun to see it on, but alas, it was not a good fit for my short finger.

I actually called my mom afterwards to say, "Guess what! I just had a 5 ct ideal cut diamond on my finger!"

She wasn''t as excited as I was.

More than likely the diamond was coated with soap , hand cream/lotion/ or some other type of substance.

Probably 90% of the folks having fine diamonds don''t take care of them, have them examined for losseness and cleaned professionally.

Can a poorly proportioned diamond look dull? Yes, of course, but it is more likely that the stone was really dirty. When you "coat" the diamond with soapscum etc, you also get the refractive index of soap, which is yucky.

I have seen rings people that have worn that the stones are acutlly held in by the "dirt". Some take a long time to clean properly.

The coated with hand lotion thing happened to me once just after I got engaged (which was right at Christmas).

I wore the ring to a party in the winter and my hands are usually so dry so I used hand lotion just before I left the house. I had never seen what could happen so I didn''t think to remove my ring first.

So the first person that wanted to see my ring I held my hand out and we both looked and I went "Oh My God!".

My beautiful diamond looked like a totally different stone!

like one of the ones you guys link to from E-Bay as a joke.

This was a 0.75 ct H VS1 - which has a lot of fire - very sparkly. It was (and still is) beautiful.

I wanted to say "No it really is a much better diamond than it looks" but I didn''t want to look like I was nuts when it was right there on my hand looking like a piece of glass. I just had to stand there and pretend nothing was the matter.

I cleaned it as soon as I could and after that I made sure to check the ring before I showed it to anyone who hadn''t seen it since I got engaged.

Yes big diamonds should sparkle too!!

Take a look at that thread where Garry posted that amazing 14c H&A stone on his hand, that thing was all aglitter, just stunning.

Chances are as others have noted it was poorly cut OR dirty or maybe both!....I never understand why people wear fine expensive jewelry and then don''t clean it or take care of it. Why spend the money to have it look like costume or eBay frozen spit?

Sorry it was a 15c D IF! Here it is...

the basic rule is,you can go to a 2.5 rb if your ring size is 3.5 or....4ct if your ring size is 5,5ct if size 6 etc,etc.well.... you get the picture.

that''s why you must have one of those little spray cleaners handy. don''t leave home without it.

and belle.....the basic rule for fancy cut is,you can go up to your ring size.

DF where on earth did you get that ''rule'' re size of diamonds to size of finger...that is the first I have ever heard of that one! But I like it, of course!
31.gif

hehehehe.......forget the 2 months salary rule! we want to go by the diamond-in-relation-to-finger-size rule. aka the dancing fire rule

Exactly! I clean mine all the time! I love them for me to look at much less anybody else. Why would I want to look at frozen spit? And expensive frozen spit, at that! I''m not sure my husband wouldn''t freak out too. "What''s wrong with your ring, Crystal!" He calls me Crystal, btw.....

That is exactly what I wondered when I saw that ring. I thought, maybe the real one is in the safe at home............You''d think that someone that has one that big would know that it will stand out like a sore thumb and everyone will grab and gawk, like I did. I asked first, "I don''t mean to grab and gawk, but......" Call me rude or whatever but I had to get a better look at that sucker.

What do you do with those double digit EU ring sizes then ?

Wow I am loving that 15c rb...

I think big rocks are great but I also think how big of a rock you can carry off depends on the setting. My mothers , she lets me try it on sometimes, looks awful on my hand.
7.gif
But if I get one that is set a little higher, hers is from Tiffany & Co and is low, then abigger stone managaes not to make my hands look like monkey hands. I wear a size six and have big plams and shorter fingers. I dont think I could pull off a six carat ring. However a six carart pendent would be just fine
31.gif
. I think I top out at about 9mm.....poor BF he must rue the day I found PS.

geez girls, must a man teach you everything?
2.gif
you girls call yourself a diamond addict and you don't know the diamond-in-relation-to-finger-size rule?

Mara; what's your ring size?

Ana; i'm talking about ring size that is use in the U.S. not those double digit EU ring sizes.

I''m a 6 so that means up to 5.5c? Woo hoo.

I would venture to say (but no one quote me on this!
9.gif
) that 5.5c would be too big for my finger...

I did try on a 5c oval once and it looked horrible on me, so big on my hand it looked fake.
