Depending on the vendor, this may be an issue or not at all: the diamond I bought through WF three months ago is still listed on the BN website.

I once contacted an online jeweller regarding an "in-house" stone listed on their website. They replied a few hours later, apologising and saying that the stone was already sold and that they had forgotten to remove it from the listing.
