Should I trade in my RB 3.02 ct F VS2 for a 5.17ct J VVS cushion?

Hi Phoenix,

Just wanted to drop you a note to let you know that you were sooooo right about DSS when you replied to one of my earlier posts. I was asking everyone how I should spend my upgrade budget. I especially remember your 'warning' because you live in Singapore (I live in HK) and knew exactly what kind of social environment I'm in.

Anyways, to make a long story short, I ended up with a 2.51 ct RB E VS1 (originally I had my heart set on a 2.25ish ct D VS1). I ended up with the 2.51 almost by accident cuz that's the best match my jeweler had on hand during the time I was back home in NY. Now I'm sooooo glad I wound up with a larger stone (though only slightly larger but nonetheless larger) cuz it's not looking so large any more. Before I got the upgrade, I thought I would be absolutely, completely, without a doubt overjoyed with this size but the honest truth is, i'm not as overjoyed as i thought . I'm embarrassed to admit this and feel really materialistic. Just had to get it off my chest...hope you don't mind.

Hi there Diamondnut

,

Yes, I do remember you and yr thread as well as my 'warning', LOL. I'm sooo glad you went with the larger stone. Believe me, 1/4ct does make a difference. Aren't Singapore and HK aweful? Practically everyone (or at least those who are into diamonds) is *obsessed* with the higher colour and clarity AS WELL AS size!!
4.gif
. Even though most of my friends couldn't care less about diamonds, I see these 'tai-tais' walking around with these beautiful big honkers and I suspect that's the source of my diamond sickness, LOL (along with PS!!

), which is kind of silly on my part, cos I don't know them let alone being able to keep up with them at all (not a chance in a million years!). I just think that their rings make me drool and fuel my diamond addiction!
6.gif
. The shops with their humongous (sp?) stones don't help either.

No, you're not materialistic at all. I'm there with you, sister!

. I'm glad that we're able to share and relate to this.

I'm right there with both of you. First of all, Phoenix / Lien - I would agree with all the PPs in that I don't think this J cushion is THE ONE. Honestly, an F to a J is a big jump in color and personally, I wouldn't do it. You already have a (big) beautiful stone, so I would just sit back and wait for the *perfect* one to come along -- cuz it eventually will.

I just got a new 2.75 in the Michael B setting, and I hate to admit it as well, but it doesn't look huge on me...which makes me a little sad. I love the blinginess of the setting and matching w-band...and the new stone sparkles like crazy, but I had really wanted a 3+ and the fraction of the millimeter is making all the difference to me. I think something is wrong with my eyes!

I can *so* relate to this, cutey and diamondnut! I didn't think that I'd be able to discern a difference between my 2.68 and a 3 (the other stones that I was looking at were all 3-ish), but if you're prone to DSS is surprising how quickly you can become accustomed to a size! Arghh!

DSS is enough of a problem here on PS... And I know that over there (Singapore and HK) it must be worse. I have heard from several jewelers (Mark at ERD, being one of them) that all the big stones are being shipped over there bc that''s what is preffered and the market for them is larger. It''s part of the reason it is so hard to find good stones over 3cts here. So I sympathize with you gals over there, it''s tough enough in the states, bc I always saw 2cts or 3 and was blown away, so I can''t imagine seeing 3-5cts constantly and not getting DSS.

cuteyTT, bem3231...your rings are exquisite! I''m sure you''ve been told that by everyone who''s seen it. which makes it even more crazy that we''re not happy with it, doesn''t it??? i''m so glad that you guys can relate to what i''m feeling (but trying VERY hard not to feel).

lien, you are dead on with the seeing all the tai-tai''s and their baubles as a source of DSS. why DO we feel the need to want to keep up even though we don''t even know them?? it''s just bizarre! but oh so true. when i first moved to hk 4 years ago, a wise friend told me that this place is bad for your soul. i''m sure he wasn''t referring to DSS but it definitely applies! when i was living in NY (which is itself a breeding ground for DSS), i was never into rocks like this. when my first fiance proposed with a 1.3ct, i thought it was enormous! and when my second fiance (and now husband) proposed with a 1.56ct, i was ecstatic. and then we move to HK and all hell breaks loose!

i looked at your old threads and have got to say that with your size 4 finger, your ring looks GORGEOUS! you barely have that much more surface area to cover! if i had smaller fingers (i''m a 6 to 6.25), i reckon i would suffer from DSS a smidge less. it''s funny...last week i had knee surgery and due to a combination of factors, have lost a little weight. normally i would look at my stomach hoping that it''s flattened a little but now i focus on my fingers to see if they''ve gotten slimmer! i''m obsessed i tell ya!

Could we get a picture of your 3 carat on your hand? I could dig up the pics yes, but would it be possible to post your ring?

A 5 carat cushion would be devine. But like others said, a 3 carat round on a small ring size? Even factoring in shrinkage?

I wanna see a picture :)

Ohhh, thank you Diamondnut, and yes, I am told that daily. And yes, I do feel crazy sometimes!...

I know for sure that I really feel crazy and I just don't understand how the difference in 0.3 mm (between what I just got and all the 3 caraters I was looking at) could be so evident, even without side-by-side comparison. For some ridiculous reason, I look down and the center stone seems kind of small to me...! I keep asking my husband if it looks big from his vantage point, to which he says 'yes' and thinks I'm strange.

Actually, it would be more accurate to say that it doesn't look 'small' per se, but just not big...to the point where I had to get out a ruler to measure the stone myself to make sure it was the right size! Every time I tried on a 3+ ct solitaire, it looked big enough that I had to question whether I would feel comfortable wearing it everyday and everywhere. With my new ring, I definitely don't feel like it's too big to wear everyday -- which I guess is a good thing...? But the negative is that DSS has already reared its ugly head!

Hahah, you stole that line from HSBC, Mais!

Oh it''s so nice to hear that there is DSS! Cuz the DAY I got my diamond I said, oh it''s beautiful, but I can handle a carat and a half! Not meaning to be ungrateful or anything, but I thought this stone would look huge on my tiny size 4 fingers, and well, it looks wonderful, but not the BANG that I was going for. it''s wonderful and I lvoe it and it''s gorgess, ( I have a .85 cushette) and I can''t wait to get another one! The best part is my FI said I cannot upgrade...cuz he''s fond of my 1st diamond..he say''s I''d have to get a new one! AND wear it on my right hand...so I get to get an upgrade right hand diamond ring! YAY! lol, not for some time yet...but the itching has begun!
