Hello all! I am in a big quandry...I love, love, LOVE my original engagement ring but it was never what I had imagined. Due to being able to get an inherited stone recut, my fiancee and I designed a ring together based on a picture we saw online of a twisted halo. It is just amazing. I even got two very, very light pink diamond bands that fit around it to make a beautiful and unique look.

HOWEVER, I just recently bought a ginormous Henri Daussi ring and want to have it reset into a pink diamond halo. Originally thinking of this for a RHR, but now I want it for my engagement ring. Problem is, husby says I can't have both...

So now the question is- is it worth it to sell my engagement ring? Will I even get a decent amount for it? Center stone is non certed but sending to GIA is not a problem; i have had it checked out by 4 different jewelers and they all have the same conclusion for it- it's an awesome stone. So I'm not worried about what GIA will say, just havent had a chance to send it off.

Here is my current ring:

Center stone: .90 modified round brilliant ( it's about 40 years old but had the girdle re-cut to modern standards)
Color: E, MAYBE F but I have put it against GIA E and F's and I believe it to be an E
Clarity: VS1, no visible inclusions at all even under the loop

Setting is in pallidium and platinum and cost an armand a leg, hence my worry about not being able to get much for it...it's a size 4.25 and can be sized a tiny bit up or down, there is a space with no diamonds in the back.

Ok just trying to clarify. You would sell your engagment ring (meaning setting plus diamond) to fund your HD ring? Or are you only selling your setting?

For me personally I would sell as settings are less expensive then the diamond and easily replaced. Practically anyone can make a split twisted shank halo if you decide to go back to it. If the diamond is included in the sell I would think harder about it as it might be harder to replace.

I personally am not emotionally attached to my wedding set (or at least my first 3 sets I wasn't). It wasn't until I found something I truly loved that I became unwilling to part with it.

If you can afford to keep it, I would just keep it. It sounds like wedding set might have sentimental value and you can always set a cz in it. Does the inherited stone have meaning?

Did you buy the Henri Duassi yet?

Hi Ladies!

I, also, am not especially attached to my ring. Of course I say that now, because I still have it! As I mentioned , my dream ring was a big daussi cushion ( which I now have, but had to sacrifice on color which is why I want a pink halo) but since we were given this stone, we designed a ring I could love. Even though I love it and recognize it as a thing of beauty...I still long for my giant cushion in pink =)

My worry right now is that I will just get peanuts for the worth of the setting. It is not a "name" setting, but it was still $$$. The work on it is just incredible. So I guess the real question is: can I find someone who will love the ring intact, or will I have to (gulp) sell it for parts, so to speak, to get any real money out of it?

Here is a pic of the Daussi for fun. It is a J color center, but the sides are F-G and the color difference drives me BANANAS. This is also a horrible pic =)

Well, I have to tell you that there are tons of people here who have halo rings with J color center stones! Most think the contrast between the halo and the diamond is beautiful. I hope Sarahbear comes back because she has a good example of that!

I am still not clear on what you will have to sell in order to be able to have a new setting made. The Daussi ring (which is beautiful) came with a setting and your current ring has a nice setting and you'd ditch BOTH of those just to reset the Daussi stone? You are going to lose a ton of money if you do that, because most settings sell for less than half (or worse if the person overpaid for the setting to begin with). And, do you have any idea how much a pink diamond halo will cost? Because it would be a lot more than a regular white diamond halo.

I certainly would not get rid of the inherited diamond. You obviously didn't have to sell it to buy the new ring, so I would keep that ring as is or set the diamond into a pendant. But you just won't get a lot for that setting second hand. The diamond would also have to come back GIA Excellent cut to have much of a chance of getting a good amount for it, and since it is an older stone, I am going to guess that it probably won't come back excellent cut.

I'd keep the old ring rather than sell low, and I'd keep the new one as an e-ring in the halo it is already in. Honestly, the cost of a pink halo and how you might get tired of it eventually would make me very hesitant to go with that idea. Not to mention, you'd only get a fraction of what the two settings cost if you sell them.

So if you can afford it but you DH doesn't want you have 2 erings.

-Keep your dream ring. It is what you want so love it!
-Keep your orginal heirloom diamond and put it in a pendant (wear it or keep it for your daughter or future children)
-Keep your setting and set a Colored stone or CZ in there.

And since DS brought it up I'm all for lowered colored diamonds set in halos. My cushion is an N/O set in a VC halo with G/H melee. I like the contrast, but that is just me.

Thank you ladies for your thoughts!

I think what is really killing me is knowing (as you mentioned diamondseeker) that both these setting total $6K+ , but I would be lucky to get 25% of that.

My ultimate wish is:

1) To keep the diamond from my original ER and have it set into a pendant to wear every day
2) To sell my original setting + my henri daussi setting and only have to put in a little more for my "dream" pink halo

I have started getting quotes for the pink halo setting I want, and it is $$$$ for sure. However, i am always one for a project and so have been trying to source the tiny pink diamond melee needed myself, and then use the money from selling the other two settings for the new setting ( so all I have to purchase out of pocket, technically, is the pink melee)

I have been creeping on PS for months looking at various warm stones in whiter halos, and though I know many people love them the contrast just isn't for me. If the pink halo is not forseeable in the near future, I may end up getting the stones switched out to lower color stones- it bothers me that much!!

That said, The Daussi setting is beautiful in and of itself and I would hope someone would snatch it up if i offered it up cheaply enough.

And for the record- DH is NOT ok with me just keeping everything ;)

His opinion: sell my original setting. keep daussi setting, and change to lower color stones if it bothers me so much. The only reason he let me get the Daussi now was because we got it for an unbelievably good deal.

...but I still want a pink halo. Sigh.

Does he realize the old setting may sell for $1000 or less? I mean, it could have a colored stone set in it and be a beautiful right hand ring for you! I just don't see that selling it is going to gain you enough to be worth it.

I'll bet a quality halo setting with pink diamonds (which I think you should not try to source yourself) will be well over $5000 and maybe more like $7500. They are not just going to take out the halo stones and replace with I-J color. They would have to remake the whole halo to do it right. I hope you'll give this some time and try to consider keeping your current setting. You should have tried to negotiate buying the cushion diamond without the Daussi setting, actually.

Oh, and one more thing. Changing to a lower color halo might not even do what you are wanting because well cut little round brilliants are going to face up really white even in I-J color and still probably result in looking whiter than your cushion.

Can you return the Daussi? If so it doesn't matter how much of a deal it was if you need to sell it to fund your dream ring. Personally I would return it and just wait to save for your dream ring. I looked into a pink halo for my cushion (a la Tiffany double pink halo) and most of the PS vendors only wanted $500-$650 more for pink diamonds.

And I would not change to lower color melee for 2 reasons. First you are just wasting more money on a setting that is not your dream. Two- lower color melee also equals much ore quality. All the vendors I asked about it refuse to work with it.

Thanks for all the continued and valuable insight Sarahbear and Diamondseeker!

1) The "wish" would be to get a brand new halo made with a pink diamond head. Sarahbear, I would love to know which vendors quoted you that amount to use pink stones instead- I should email them!

2) Totally understand that switching the stones on the current daussi setting out may not give the results I want, or that it may not even be feasible. However, I honestly don't like the look now. Diamondseeker, i did in fact ask about just buying the stone alone but the person selling would not split it up. My original thought was to have it set with a large colored stone and wear as a cocktail ring.

3)Husby says even if i can get around 1K for each setting, that is 2K to put towards the setting I really want. I can't really argue with him there.

This is why I am torn. I have two beautiful rings, neither of which completely do it for me in the current form. I feel awful on many different levels- guilty because i have so much, but still pining for what I really want.

For reference: here is my dream ring setting- it belongs to sparkle blinded

Well if it is your DREAM ring then dump everything and do it. Some sounds advice that was given to me during my reset was "stop whinning about it and do it. You should LOVE your ering and not whine about it." That was my little brother  I have made some costly mistakes with my erring but now after a few upgrades and several resets I'm very happy. I'm telling you the journey to find the man was so much easier then the ring.

For quotes for a pink halo see Steven Kirsch and Victor Canera. Their settings are pricey but the upgraded pink diamonds weren't that much more. Only a few hundred. I would also contact ERD though don't bother with email. They don't respond- you will need to call. ERD does CAST rings and hand forged so if you want to save a little go with CAST as they do beautiful HW inspired halos.

Let me say that we understand. Many of us have had mulitple rings working our way toward THE ONE. So you are just normal here.

I suppose if your deal on the Daussi ring was so good that the loss on the setting is meaningless, that is good. I would just say that as long as he is okay with selling the two settings for something like $1000 each, then is he also okay with putting $4000 more toward the new setting? I wouldn't make that setting without having someone like Victor Canera or Steven Kirsch make it (and of course, Mike Robinson is a master working with pink halos, but he is in New Zealand!).

(ha, I see Sarah has posted similar advice!)

I learned from the best

Have you seen warm stones in pink halos? I have a pink diamond half-eternity. I don't wear it with my J coloured diamond because I really dislike the combination - it makes my J look muddy rather than invitingly warm. My pinks are paler though, so with some time the eye can recalibrate them to "white" easily enough - I imagine more vivid melee would largely resolve that particular problem.

Ditto DS and Sarahbear - I would definitely only go to someone who A) has expertise with that sort of setting and B) has access to high-quality pink melee.

DS - just FYI Mike isn't interested in taking on any more PS projects ::)

What i am most likely going to have to do is sell the setting and set this in a temporary rose gold solitaire setting for a while- Something inexpensive that will at least allow me to wear it while I plot =) There are tons of gemstone/ faux stone rings on ebay that i could switch out fairly inexpensively...

There have been a few rings here on PS that were J (even k) in a pink halo and I thought it gave the warmer color an almost peachy hue, which is what I really want.

To me with these warmer colors, I either want to 1) make them peach, lol or 2) make them whiter.

I feel like cushions always hold more color, and they tend to pick up some of the outside setting. A very distinct rose gold/ pink diamond really appeals to me.

HOWEVER- I will issue the caveat that I have NEVER seen a lower color in a pink halo IN PERSON. I have seen a G color in a pink halo; I have seen a J color in a white halo (obviously). But never the two together. Only on PS...

Also i would love to see your J Yssie!

Sparkle Blinded's ring is very pretty in those pics ::)

I think it also depends on whether your intended center has yellow or brown modifiers - my J is yellow, which really doesn't work with pale pinks to my eyes, but brownish stones can sometimes do beautifully next to pink (sometimes not!). In any case I would trust LM/SK/VC to tell you if they think the pinks wouldn't work, if you decide to go with one of them when you take the plunge!

I looked through my photos and I don't have any of my J with the pinks, I'm sorry - I know I dislike them together so I guess I've just never bothered to try and photograph what I see...

Are your settings wg or plat? You may have to try selling on eBay as I highly doubt there is a lineup of people here for a Daussi ring. Looking af your first setting, it should be an easier sell if priced right. Most people herd like ex cut for mrb do you may face a longer time selling. I am thinking you may be able to convince a vendor too out pink melee in ur current setting.

Hi Charmypoo-

The setting is 18K white gold.I am going to discuss some options with my jeweler this weekend. I spoke to Leibish and Diamonds by Lauren about getting the color and size of melee I need. In looking into it more, I think I may go the route of keeping the HD setting and replacing the diamonds in the halo with Pink- but I need to find just the right person to do this. The setting is honestly so pretty and delicate. The contrast that shows up sometimes just bugs me so much.

I may need to do a quick and dirty photoshop job tonight to see how the pink will look against the yellow. I have one picture that I believe captures the stone at it's darkest ( since it changes so much depending on the light).

You should also try contacting ERD who has made a number of pink halos in the past. I have seen them source pink melee.

Steven Kirsch may be willing to switch out the melee as well.

Thanks Charmypoo! I will contact them. From what I have seen on PS they aren't good through email- should I just call them and ask?

SK is great on email. ERD has never - NOT ONCE- in 4 years responded to a request from me via emial. I have given up on them for pretty much any of my projects. However, I have heard wonderful things if you call them. I work through email so to each their own.

I really question doing a pink halo on a tinted diamond. I think it anything it will bring out the yellow a lot more. Or even possible a brownish color.

Allright, here is my EXTREMELY ROUGH photoshop job. Thoughts?

Just to play devils advocate I did a yellow one for you. I think it compliments your centers color.

Sarahbear, sorry about your email experience with ERD. When I did my wife's upgrade with Chris, never spoke on the phone, all email, and responses were like lightning.

I emailed them didn't get a response. Called them they said they have email problems. Very apologetic and super helpful.

This absolutely plays up the yellowness of the center- but I wan't to make it look whiter, not more yellow =(

Anyone have any other ideas?
