Hello community!

I found out about this amazing site just a few days ago, some days after I went ahead and purchased a loose diamond for my GF's engagement ring! After reading and understanding more of the diamonds angles and proportions and how it affect the stones brilliance, fire, leakage etc I feel kinda overwhelmed and now believe i may have made a bad decision on the stone.

The stone according to GIA:
Weight: 1.70ct
Color - E
Cut - Ex
Polish - Ex
Symmetry - Ex
Clarity - VVS1
7.61x7.63x4.68
Table - 58%
Crown Angle - 36.0
Pavilion Angle - 40.6
Pavilion Depth - 42.5
Depth 61.5
lower Girdle - 70
star length - 50
cutlet - none
Medium Blue Fluorescent

HCA score - 1.8
Light return - Very good
Fire - Excellent
Scintillation - Very good
Spread - Very good

I would greatly appreciate if someone could help me evaluate this stone.
Should I reconsider my choice? Got any recommendation on other stones?

I bought this stone through JA.com, it's already been paid for but not yet shipped.

Thanks a lot!! <3

It falls under less than ideal proportion but I like its chunky facets.

Did you plug it into the HCA score?

Ideal proportions to target:
  • 54-57 table
  • 60-62.4 depth (prefer < 62)
  • 34-35 crown (maybe 35.5, if paired with a 40.6 pavilion)
  • 40.6-40.9 pavilion (maybe 41, if paired with a 34 crown)
  • 75-80 LGF's
  • Inverse relationship between the crown/pavilion
  • HCA score of 0-2, maybe 2.5-3 if very precisely cut

The angles are actually pretty okay for me. It is rather common to see a 36 crown angle to be paired with 40.6 pavilion angle. The actual video looks like a rather good diamond with clear arrows. I am betting my money that the IdealScope should look rather red. At this carat weight, usually I will prefer to look at the face-up size and see how it compares to other options.

I won't post any links here due to forum rules, but you can actually find super ideal stones at around 1.657ct that has the around same face-up size: 7.60x7.63. Guess this is not strange as the crown angle is at 36 degree, whereby it may look slightly smaller than a stone with tighter proportions. The visual difference is probably negligible, but maybe not the price, as your stone hits another magical mark of 1.7ct.

I can understand your concern though, since you already paid, I would probably suggest you to look for stones that are coming from their signature line which is True Hearts. They should possess better proportions, but with some premium. That being said, you will still have to choose carefully because the variances in True Hearts are bigger than some other vendors IMO.

Also, you are buying a stone with Medium Blue Fluorescence, so you may want to check the milkiness of the stone. Usually it should be fine though, but I have to say personally, my tolerance level is a Faint (GIA).

I would also recommend you to downgrade the clarity level to probably a VS1 if can, so that you can put the "premium" for VVS for a stone with better proportions. Just my 2 cents.

I think some other forumers will start giving you options as well.

It’s also has medium blue fluorescent for its E color, which may (not always) cause it to be slightly milky/cloudy. Verify in person.
You did great though for not knowing all these minor details.

Usually the market discounts colorless stones with Fluor. Most stones are not negatively impacted by Fluor but have an appraiser check anyway.

There are lots of discussions here but too late for me to link.

Lots of people look for these cause the price is more palatable, provided no cloudiness.

What does HCA say? Arrows are probably too chunky for my taste but I would be curious to see it.
