should I push the angles?

I am shopping for a 1.00 to 1.05 carat round brilliant cut in Chicago. color H or I, clarity SI1 or SI2, nothing crazy. the problem is most jewelers are only using the gia report and don''t know the crown and pavillion angles/depths. I feel like I should know these things before I buy, even if the total depth and table width are in the "acceptable" range. do you think I should ask for these before I plunk down a few thousand dollars or am I way too picky?

Um, NO! One of the first things this site teaches any new diamond buyer is that you need to know about the CUT!! And you can''t know how good or bad the cut is without these numbers unless you have a really good, well trained eye, which most consumers don''t!

So either start asking for AGS stones or find a jeweler or appraiser who has access to a Sarin machine.

For peace of mind go to a retailer who can provide you with the answers to the questions that you have. There are plenty of others around that can... not just the guys you seem to have seen so far.

Really it doesnt matter weither your spending $500 or $500 000 as your budget is your budget and you should beable to get what you want, for what you find inportant. There are plenty of chaps that sell online that you could go to... they provide alot of information upfront so you can have a good idea of what your going to get before you''ve laid down your hard earned.

Plus many of these companies have excellent return policys if you are not satisfied. so you can have it sent direct to an appraiser, either one in your local area (Pricescope lists http://www.jewelryjudge.net/Drucker.htm as being in your state at least, but my geography of the US isnt that great to know how far Northbrook is from Chicargo) or another person - i''m in the UK, and i had my stone sent to David Atlas in philidelphia for appraisal before being sent accross the pond to me. I can also recommend Richard Sherwood down in Florida - one of his reports can be seen in the gorilla gemology forum. As well as several other folks who post round here. They''ll tell you it straight - they''ll tell you a spade is a spade, and then to go on to tell about its.... *i digress*

thanks for the answers. I''ll go out there to jewelers row again (wabash&washington) and hopefully find decent jewelers who give me the pavilion and crown angles...

yes I agree, your money is valuable, get those Sarin reports to ensure you are choosing something that will perform well AND look good to your eye! good luck.

I rarely bothr with the #''s if I can see the diamond with an ideal-scope.
It costs $25 (disclaimer: and if you buy one I will get rich) and plenty of inexperianced people are passable experts with it in a few minutes.

Now that sounds interesting

Do you think there could be a report one day of what five guys do with an I-Scope in 15 minutes, just like there is one comparing lab certs ?

That pink thing is so simple that it takes a slight leap of faith to go for it as is
