Hi everyone! This is my first post and I need help for my son who is planning on getting engaged shortly. He has the opportunity to purchase a diamond with the following characteristics for $3500.
Shape: Round brilliant
Clarity: VS2
Weight: 1.099
Diameter: 6.74-6.80
Table size: 65.9%
Crown angle: 33.70
Pavilion angle: 41.20
Star Length: 55.7%
Lower halves: 83.6%
Girdle Thickness: 3.2%
Girdle Minimum: 1.3
Girdle Maxomum: 2.3
Culet Size: 0.6
Crown Height: 11.31%
Pavilion Depth: 43.40%
Total Depth: 57.87%
Estimated GIA Cut Grade: Very Good
Finish: Polish/symmetry: Good/Good
He had it appraised because there is no lab certification and they ran a Sarin report to get the above info. The appraiser looked at the stone and determined it was I in color with strong blue fluorescence by placing it in the fold of a white business card. My son is concerned about the large table to depth percentage and the color issue. The stone looks beautiful, but this is a big step. I''d like some opinions on the stone and price.
Thanks

cut is pretty bad, price is low, you get what ya pay for.....

Most people here would only recommend buying GIA or AGS certified diamonds with Excellent or Ideal cut. That way you are at at least in the area of nicely cut diamonds. Avoid non-certified, EGL, IGI and other lab certificates because they are known to be unreliable. He won''t be able to get a well cut 1 ct. diamond at that price.

I don''t see a comparable I VS2 at the moment, but here are a couple of ideal cut diamonds for examples:

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/2161/

http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-2433965.htm#

Both vendors offer a wire discount, the GOG price is posted and the WhiteFlash price would be 5% less for A Cut Above diamonds and mentioning PriceScope discount.

Welcome to pricescope Kaycee! Well you''ve seen this stone so that is something, but I think few on this forum would recommend a diamond with those specs. It is far from ideal in cut which would bother me more than the color.

Isn''t this a very unusual, if not haphazard way of determining a stone''s color?

"The appraiser looked at the stone and determined it was I in color with strong blue fluorescence by placing it in the fold of a white business card."

Even if your son''s budget is tight, wouldn''t you rather buy a stone where their methods are a little more precise? Sorry if that sounds harsh, but this jeweler sounds just a bit on the less-informed side?

Maybe check out some of the local jeweler links or the online diamond vendors listed on this site:

Hope your search goes well : )

hi kaycee...

that stone is going to be very white brilliant with it''s large table and shallower depth but it will seriously lack FIRE inside the stone.

i had a stone similar to that one originally witih a 61.9% table and a 56.9% depth with a very shallow crown angle and 41 pav angle....the diamond was not very pretty at all, it sparkled alot of white light but it lacked any fire, it only looked good in certain lighting situations...it was really just not a winner all around.

buying a crappily cut stone can be an expensive mistake as no one wants a diamond that looks like a milky shard of glass. having had that stone i originally had, i''d much rather have had a smaller stone with a better cut quality on my hand.

i''d tell your son to keep searching around, and if he can shop or research online, he should do so. you can find some great deals with reputable online vendors (i have purchased multiple top-quality cut diamonds with PS vendors) and you can save by not using a local brick and mortar shop which has typically more overhead than someone who works primarily online.

good luck!

Here is a stone i would consider:
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamond.asp?cid=131&item=876308

It''s a 1.01 I SI2 AGS0 that looks like it could be eye-clean with what appear to be white inclusions. The PS price is $4000.

The diameter is a little smaller BUT if it has better light return than the one your son is considering that means it will look as big as the other stone if it returns more uniform light sparkles to your eye.

LOL...if your appraiser is using a business card to grade diamonds, he should be washing cars for a living.
