I was wondering what all your thoughts were on proposing without appraising my ring first? I have bought the ring, but I''m awaiting the arrival of my GIA cert (I only have a faxed copy) so I cannot get an appraisal done until the original comes.

The stone has it''s certificate number lasered onto the girdle, so I''m pretty sure the dealer would not take the chance to give me a laser inscribed cert. with a stone not inscribed???

I''m happy with all the numbers, stats on the certificate (no crown/pavillion angles/percentages) but everything else points towards an Ideal stone. Plus, in person the stone is beautiful.

Any advice? Should I go ahead and propose or wait for an independent appraisal?

In my case we have been openly talking of marriage. I wil not purchase the main diamond until she says yes (and she agrees with this). It''s a lot of money, and will take time and effort to find the right diamond...

There is an agreement that the ring will be a 3 stone ring with small accent sidestones. Thus, I have already purchased a matched set of 1/4 carat (1/2 carat total weight) sidestones. She loves them...

In my case, I knew the answer was going to be yes (I was extremely nervous anyways). So, that would be ok cuz it''s just a symbol anyways.

Can those of you who voted ''no'' please explain why?

As for the two replies above, I''m not really sure how they are relevant to this poll?

I know my fiancee is going to say yes, that is not a problem, my only question was if it is ok to give her the ring before getting it independently appraised (to make sure it is what it says it is).

Kenny,

Why can''t you get it appraised until the original lab report arrives?

You should be confident that you won''t want to return the ring before you give it as a gift. If this decision is waiting on your appraisal then you should either postpone the engagement or find a faster appraiser. I recommend the latter. If the appraisal is purely for record keeping and insurance purposes then it won''t matter either way altough if you are planning on buying an insurance policy, it''s probably a good idea to get it in force before she starts wearing it.
