Should I let Jareds set my JA diamond??

Hello everyone,

So I recenlty purchased an engagement ring setting from a local Jared''s store. I bought a loose diamond from JA. Here is my question...

I am a little nervous if I should take the loose diamond to Jareds and let them set it OR take both pieces to a 3rd party local shop and have it set.

I am just wondering if Jareds is going to do less than perfect work or give me grief because I got the diamond elsewhere. Also, will there appraisal be way off because its not a diamond they sold??

Hi Ian

Whoever you choose, ask if they will assume responsibility should the diamond get damaged whilst setting, this is rare but it can happen so definitely something you need to check out. You could ask JA if they will set the stone in your setting for you, no harm in asking.

As for an appraisal, I would advise using an independant appraiser who does not have a vested interest, see this tool here.

So I have an appt Monday with the PS appraiser in my area. I am taking the loose diamond, she will appraise it, I will get the diamond set and she will then reappraise the total ring.


So now that that is out of the way, any other thoughts of Jareds for the setting process? Or anyway to find reputable independant shops in my area? I don''t want to ship the items but I also want to pick a place where I don''t have to worry.

I don''t know that there''s an excellent resource available that''s generic to answer this question. If you say where you are, folks on line may know. Also, you could check the "local jewelers" resource above, under Resoucres, here, as a place to start...

I would not let Jared do it. They had set a stone for me purchased pre Pricescope, and I was not pleased with the quality of their work. After I found PS, I discovered that many people have had complaints with them.

However, just realize if James Allen sets the diamond for you and damages your Jared setting, your warranty with Jared will not cover it.

So I took the advice here...

1. Took the loose Diamond to my local PS appraiser, Katy. She was great. Her ratings were right in lines with the GIA rating of the JA diamond which also re-assured me of the quality.
2. I decided to let Jareds set it even after my hesitations. I had purchased the setting there a few weeks ago, but left it at the store. I wasn''t sure how they were going to react when I brought the stone in. They obviously weren''t thrilled that I didn''t spend 5k more with them but they honestly didn''t give me any grief. They of course didn''t mention anything positive about my diamond but thats understandable. I gave them the diamond and they said it would be ready in 24 hours. I picked up completed ring yesterday and it was a knockout. The diamond looks so beautiful in the setting. I know they might not be the most respected place, but all in all, I''m happy I had them set the diamond.
3. Tomorrow I go back to Katy and get the whole piece appraised.

As a summary, I know I was able to get the setting my GF wanted by picking it locally and got a MUCH nicer diamond for my money with JA. I am very happy with the overall process.

May I ask...did the question of liability every come up...raised by you or them (Jared''s)...as to what their liability would be in the case of damage to the diamond?

Actually Jareds didn''t mention a word about it either way. Again, they became more "business like" (yet not rude or anything) when I handed them the diamond. They provided good service, just not so "omg would you like a coffee while you wait" as they typically do. They didn''t mention laibility, but I had already got it insured as a loose diamond with my insurance company so I wasn''t concerned. For others in the situation, who want to buy a setting locally, Jareds was overall great with the process and I would recommend it to others.

Ian, since this is not common practice, I'm sure many here would be interested to know who the insurer is, and if anything unusual came about to get this insurance.

It's the loose diamond piece, being insured, that's unusual. Good for you!
