I am in my 50s and have always wanted to learn to play an instrument. Our community college is offering a 6 week totally beginners class for guitar. I am tempted. Should I go for it? Is it harder to learn to play when you are older??
DO IT! I bet you'll love it. It's so much fun to just be around new people, learning a skill you're all interested in learning.
I teach community college and I wouldn't be surprised if you find that many of your classmates are around your age. That's the beauty of community colleges, the diversity of the student body.
I've had a guitar for years and have yet to learn to play it. You've just inspired me to seek out a class.
ETA: One of my book club members is turning 60 this year and she's recently taken up guitar, but she's also learned to play several other instruments the last few years. We have a folk music school in town and she and her husband started with one class there about two years ago and have been addicted ever since.
Go for it, Soocool! And keep us updated. I've seen a lot of people thrive with hobbies that they picked up at a later age.
One example: My mom's friend(who is much older that you) started taking drum lessons. Now she is in a semi-professional drumming group and performs.
Why not! I don't see how age should have anything to do with it. I tried taking guitar lessons one summer. I gave up way too quickly- I had a difficult time forming chords.
Just a thought: I had an electric guitar and it was kind of disappointing. Every experience I've had in listening to an electric guitar has been in the context of a band, ya know? Like awesome bands or guitarists. So it was kind of humbling, and lame, to compare my own awkward strumming to say... Jimi Hendrix. Talk about a let down I think maybe acoustic would be a more satisfying experience but that's just me.
Absolutely! DH's grandmother took piano lessons from age 85-90 and she loved it! 50 isn't old obviously but it's never too late to learn something new!
Ok, I will do it! The class doesn't start until Sept 20. I am guessing that it will be a group lesson and my daughter is willing to lend me her acoustic guitar. She did tell me that I will have to trim back my nails though. DH isn't back from his business trip yet. I wonder what he will say?
You should so learn! It's so funny you started this thread because I just started learning in the past couple of weeks. You might find you really enjoy it or it could be relaxing. Gotta love hobbies.
