I have an heirloom old mine diamond (somewhere between emerald and cushion cut; been around the family for four generations) that is being mounted into a ring for me to propose with. It''s between three and four carats, and the appraiser called to ask if I wanted to have it certified by AGS or GIA because it''s D color and large.

As far as I''m concerned, I don''t need it certified (for $400 or so) since I have no intention of it ever being sold. Is there any other reason why a lab certification might be important?

I would want it certified. It's just information about what you own; good for insurance purposes and good for identification purposes. The only time you can have it done is when a stone is loose so right now is an opportunity you won't have again for a while. For something that large and valuable I think your appraiser is correct in suggesting it.

I am sure someone else will chime in with which lab would be best for an old mine cut.

How lucky to have a stone like this in your family! It's gorgeous although I thought old mine cuts were roundish.
