Hello, I ordered a GIA 1.5 carat round, eye clean SI2, j color solitaire for $6826 on Blue Nile. The specs are as follows:

Symmetry: excellent
Polish: excellent
Culet: none
Fluorescence: strong blue
Table: 61%
Depth: 60.6%
Crown: 34 degrees
Pavilion: 41.2 degrees

When I entered the specs in the Holloway Cut Advisor, it scored 4.0 and had very good light, good scintillation, good fire and very good spread. I plan to set it in a platinum 2 mm band.

Is this a smart purchase or should I run the other direction? Thank you!

I am also considering a GIA round 1.2 carat, eye clean SI2, I color stone with strong blue fluorescence. Blue Nile claims the strong blue does not make the stone look milky or hazy. The price is $5118.

Table: 55%
Depth: 62.5%
Crown: 36 degrees
Pavilion: 40.6 degrees
6.77mm x 6.81 x 4.24mm

HCA report:
Light: excellent
Fire: excellent
Scintillation: very good
Spread: very good
Score: 1.9

Vs. the round 1.5 eye clean SI2 stone with strong blue fluorescence that is 7.35mm 7.39mm x 4.47mm. Thanks so much in advance.

Anyone? I'm concerned about the dimensions of the J color 1.5 carat. Please help! Thank you.

I generally stay away from diamonds that score more than 2.0 on the HCA unless there are other factors to back it up that it has good potential (ASET).

Between the two, the second is the clear winner based on HCA, however that's really not enough to make a confident decision. You need to get reflector images (ASET or idealscope). I would start from the beginning and nail down some specs and priorities, assuming you want a well cut stone that's performs in all lighting conditions. Are you in a hurry? Do you have time for us to look for you?

What's your budget? $7k max for stone only?
Fluoro ok? Yes
Size? max for budget, hope to get up to 1.2-1.5 ct.
lowest acceptable color? I/J
Clarity? eye clean Si1/Si2

Thank you for your response! I am in a bit of a hurry as the order was placed today! It has a return policy though. As far as specs, I would be most comfortable with:
$6500 for stone including tax
1.2-1.5 carat range
D-I color range
Eye clean si1/si2
Excellent cut, symmetry, polish (GIA)
Round
Strong blue fluorescence ok on lower color diamond

I just don't want to spend $6800 on a large, poorly cut J stone with a mediocre performance when I can get something better.
Thank you so much.

Thank you so much.

I would DEFINITELY not purchase an SI2 stone without being able to inspect it in person prior to purchase.

Stick with a stone that has light performance data and actual photos.

Here are stones that have a top-notch cut, at your price range:
1.218ct, J, SI1

1.2ct, J, SI2

1.15ct, K, VS2

1.12ct, H, SI2

All of those are winners, just check to make sure it meets YOUR definition of eye-clean. Best of luck!

Since you are in a hurry, I would just call Union Diamond and B2C and give them these specs and have them search for you. They can tell you if they have notes about eye clean or other characteristics of diamonds. Generally though, the diamonds I saw that might meet your needs were more like 1.2-1.3 cts and around 7.05mm diameter, not much bigger unless you decide to with 60/60 type (which are spreadier and more brilliant balanced)

Cancel that order before they ship it. I wouldn't even consider a stone that had a score that high. I personally only buy when there are photos of the stone and light performance information, and the listings that Rocky posted do give you that. I do prefer I color, but J can get you a little more size. I wouldn't go below J, though.

Everyone, thank you so much for your quick responses and recommendations. I cancelled the order!

Good call.

Did the recommendations above address your concern for a new stone?

If not, what are you looking for that would differ from these options?

We'll get you set up!
