I am on the verge of buying a diamond for my engagement ring and I would love some feedback as to weather it is good enough for the price. I have done some research on diamonds but really don't know all that much. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is a 2.234 carat, cushion cut
G, VS2
7.26 x 8.16
Depth - 69.8%
Table - 57.9%
Culet - 0.1%
Girdle - 5%
Table - 4.20mm
Crown 35.6 degrees
Pavillion 40.3 degrees
Price - $24,237

Does anything see anything dramatically wrong with this diamond or should I go ahead with the purchase?

Hi lajones,

If the diamond is with an online vendor, can you ask for pics and possibly an ASET image? Which lab graded this diamond? It is very difficult to try to judge a cushion by numbers, so the above are essential especially if you haven't seen the diamond in person.

Is the diamond with an online seller or store jeweller?

I found it in a store in South Africa, it looked good to me but then again I don''t know all that much about diamonds. It was certified but unfortunately I can''t remember by who. Something like GLU?? However they did guarantee that if I took it to someone else and they graded it differently I would be able to return it. I hope that doesn''t sound too naive!

It was IGI certified.

IGI are considered to be soft on grading in some circumstances compared to the top tier labs GIA and AGS, you can read more here.

That would be the way to proceed if you could get it in writing that you could return the diamond if it did not check out to your satisfaction in all aspects with an independant appraiser of your choosing. I take it you aren't in the USA?

I don't know if this link would be helpful but it has contact details of appraisers in the USA.

I''m currently in South Africa, but I''ll be in Denver in about 3 weeks time.

I will definitely contact him. Thank you. Do you think the stone I first mentioned is a good one or should I hold out and wait for something GIA approved?

Its so hard to judge a cushion by numbers, at best all it gives us is a chalk outline of the stone...I would say hold out for a GIA graded diamond unless you can get the one above examined by an independant appraiser. Just curious, are you in SA on vacation and you are returning to the States to live? The reason I ask is it might be best to buy from the place where you live so you can exercise any return policy etc should you need to.

I''m in SA on holiday and will be going to Denver and Vegas for a holiday - I travel a lot! But I actually live in Vancouver. I originally started looking in Denver but thought I might be able to get some deals in SA, boy was I wrong! I think I will hold off and look in when I get home. . Thanks so much for your help.

This diamond was actually certified by IDL (Independent Diamond Grading Laboratory). Does anybody know anything about this company? Is it reputable? The store has offered to certify it with GIA (for a fee) should I go ahead with it or is IDL good enough?
