I''m contemplating buying an idealscope or an ASET scope. It would be for casual use... to help friends pick stones, to have something to take with me if I ever go to a 3d store... etc.

Should I get both? Is it worth it to get either? What are the main differences between the beginner and expert models?

How realistic is it to be able to take photos with a camera that has a good macro lens with these hand held scopes?

Any suggestions on where to buy (inexpensive) basic jewelers equipment like loupes, tweezers, etc.

Ideal-scope.com seems to have (no offense) cheesy looking overpriced basic tools.

Again, this is for casual use, in the near future I will certainly be helping a friend buy a pear shaped stone so I''m leaning more towards getting an ASET scope...

Thanks

I have a ''pro'' Ideal Scope - since it isnt too much more expensive than the beginner scope (or at least wasnt when i bought mine a couple of years ago but then the design has now been tweeked slightly) but has a higher magnification (10x as opposed to 6x)

Its easy to take photos with an ideal scope using a compact lens, it just takes practice and paitence.

Theres a good ''how to guide'' available with picture - written by Garry (the designer of the scope) but - erring on the side of caution, Pricescope policy #8.3 i think prevents me linking to it. Suffice to say - if your looking at buying one - you''ll find the guide - read Newsletter #8

i bought my tweezers and loupe from IS.com and i''ve just bought a 30x loupe from David Atlas @ gemappraisers.com - he also carries a range of tools

for rounds its 6 of one half dozen of the other.
If your going to be looking at fancy shapes get the ASET
