I would rather get a GIA cert, but the particular B&M vendor i have been working with generally uses PGS (Professional Gem Sciences) and has some EGL diamonds too. He has been in business for a long time and friends of mine has had good luck with him (at least they think). He feels PGS is as strict, but cheaper, than GIA.

Hi Jeff,

I would recommend a PGS report over a EGL report .

The head of PGS , Tom Taschey (sp) used to operate an EGL Lab
and is highly respected in the trade as are the PGS reports.

Rely on the PGS reports....No problem.

Diamonds with EGL reports can be superb stones, but dealers make some pricing allowance for a perceived liberalism of grading. In other words, the apparent bargain may dissolve if the stone is regraded by GIA or PGS. However, with an EGL or PGS report you will get full measurement details and a lot of information not on the present GIA reports. It isn't all bad news.

I say if you see one you like- just make sure you can get it appraised or have someone run a sarin(?) test within the return period! If it comes back accurate you win!
