Before only two genders were recognized and men and women had separate prisons.

Now that more than two genders are recognized we have two choices:
1. Convert all existing prisons to coed (all-gender).
2. Build lots of new prisons for these groups.

What a mess.

May be unpopular, but in crimes like that he shouldn't even be in a prison. What he did was unforgivable. (Which is a whole separate controversial thread....)

Anyway, no, not every person should be believed just because they say so. There are examples where policies are clearly abused to gain access to changing rooms and whatever other benefits to the person in question. I don't know a good answer because they are clearly the exception and others shouldn't have to face difficulty due to them but it is also true that believing blindly is causing harm to others.

That's not a reputable source of news so who knows where the truth lies.

There are lots of issues around gender identification -- conflicts between what makes the individual most comfortable and what makes everyone else they interact with the most comfortable.

And, of course, there will always be folks who abuse our trust and prey on our tendency to be kind and welcoming. That alone doesn't mean that the opportunity was wrong. There's a whole news network that does (almost) nothing but post photos of black and brown people who have committed crimes. Most of those are real crimes. What's missing is the context (i.e, the denominator) of the thousands of violent crimes that are committed daily in the US.

And she (I was going to put that in quotes but who knows) will probably get her @ss kicked in any prison population, male or female.

we used to love in a suburb that we shared with a woman's prison
there were lengthy news articles when the now Queen Camila visited
i remember one woman prisoner was quoted as saying being locked up in jail was the safest she had ever felt in her entire life

no matter what the crimes these ladies have commited society owes it to their families that no harm comes to them during their incareration

I think they should cut it off before they let him in there. Anesthesia not required.

Yup. “She” won’t be needing any of those bits as a “woman” anyway.

I hope "she" is kept in solitary, or at least away from the ladies.

That sums it up for me. Context matters when making the judgement whether to trust someone or not.

In a purely hypothetical scenario (because we don't really know the true facts of this one, not for certain), I find it deplorable that someone could make blatant use of and play on the hurt and trauma trans people experience just for one's sole immoral benefit.

Tough one. I understand not wanting to be labeled as a bigot--in 2023 you cannot have any other opinion or thought without fear of being called some kind of person who hates. Especially in academia! The speech policing is getting crazier by the day. We need to be able to think freely.

Anyway, the sleepaway camp my teen daughter goes to every year now has "girls plus" and "boys plus" cabins. This means that they will house anyone who identifies as female all together, and anyone who identifies as male all together. She does not want to go now because she is reeeallllly uncomfortable having to share a bathroom and close quarters with someone with a penis. She also has some male friends who say they would pretend to identify as female just to be close to girls, and then try to have sex/other things with them. Apparently, my husband would have done the same thing if he could have.

There is no other option except cabins for "all genders."

A real sticky wicket! What happens if he decides to be male again hoping to get a better placement? How many times to you get to get to change your identity? Clearly some standards will have to be set to protect the prisoner's rights and yet not create a revolving door nightmare for the prison system.

@LilAlex

THIS: conflicts between what makes the individual most comfortable and what makes everyone else they interact with the most comfortable.

Yes. The "everyone else" seems to not be considered much anymore.

Durkheim would say these issues have led to a state of anomie. LOL sorry, I am a little nerdy.

Seems to me that losing control of one's bodily autonomy is the start of just punishment for a person who took brutal control over the bodies of others. He is not someone who deserves or warrants any sort of consideration or recognition for anything with regards to his wants or needs.

Excellent point although it doesn't seem the criminal justice system works this way. Sad when the perpetrator has more rights than he bestowed upon his victims!

This comes up a lot in my field. Someone recently asked me what I think about the sex offender registry as a mother. I spent two years in special victims. I've interviewed many people, including kids, that had very bad things happen to them.

I said for smaller crimes like peeing in the street or even forcible touching I do not think it is necessary at all. But for crimes committed against children, or violent forcible rapes I have the right to know who is in my area and around my kids. I was told that I should instead instruct my children not to talk to strangers or get into cars with strangers etc. (as if I don't already do this) and also reminded that most offenses are committed by people we know. Again, I know this, but this close person could be the teacher who would have been your pretend banished registry. I was very annoyed at the rest of the comments made about how harmful the registry is to people and how are they supposed to live, etc. Yes, for smaller offenses it does prohibit people from moving forward. However, there was no regard for the victims who have been traumatized by other people's actions. The perpetrators CHOSE to break the law and commit a horrible, horrible act.

Also, why bother asking for my opinion if you're going to tell me my OPINION is incorrect? Rant over. Thank you. :lol-2:

@kenny itd be great if you could ask the mods to add a SA trigger warning to the thread title for survivors who are still recovering. Thanks

The two examples linked above are fairly rare. Those individuals are mentally ill, should have had psych evals to determine diagnosis and treatment and then after treatment, if found to also have gender dysphoria disorder, given the option of staying in a men's facility or undergoing hormone therapy in order to be housed in a women's facility. Perhaps even with hormone therapy, such prisoners should be housed in a separate unit since there could be other drugs required to treat their mental illness.

What is tragic is that those who abuse the system are making the lives of those who have gender dysphoria even more difficult.

If someone is scamming the system to get a lighter sentence or to continue their vile ways, then, as long as they’ve still got the equipment to carry out further assaults, they should absolutely NOT be housed with women.

I’m horrified @ProfessorBling, if I had a daughter, no way would I be happy with that situation.

They have a penis and raped? Then they are a man. It is my understanding that a genetic male pedophile would not do well in a men's prison, i.e., other prisoners won't take too kindly to his crimes against children and will physically let him know it's not tolerated (hopefully they'll beat him to a pulp).

I don't understand why they would put this POS in a women's prison. He will make the women's extremely uncomfortable.

A rapist is a rapist, whether male or female (or identifying as male or female). My good friend was raped by her female neighbor as a child.

A penis is not the only thing that can be used to rape someone. Even if he/she has had gender reassignment surgery, they can still rape.

Maybe rapists need to be put into separate facilitites?

I'm not horrified so much as disappointed. I do recall a survey sent to parents that might have been related to this decision, but it was in no way clear or indicative of what was to come. I feel this decision was made without parental input. I might have sent her if she felt comfortable, but she doesn't. And there is no other option--kids should have the option, and parents should be able to inquire about other options without being scared of labeling or being attacked for not thinking in black and white. None of this is black and white.

Yes. Females are not exempt from committing any kind of sex crime.
