Should a brand new diamond E-ring already need cleaning?

I just received the ring last Thursday and have yet to propose... But had a question about what I think is some kind of "water spot" type residue on the table. If I look at the table of the diamond from a side angle in bright light, I feel like I can see some ''spots'' on the table. I have yet to try cleaning it with the ammonia and hot water that I''ve found in the search pages. I''m just curious if it would need to be cleaned already... I really haven''t been doing much with it other than looking at it.

I''m not too worried about these spots being inclusions... or should I be?

This is a Blue Nile Signature, .92 ct RB, F, VS2 graded by AGSL to be Ideal cut with Symmetry/Polish being Ideal/Ideal (confirmed w/ GCAL). I have yet to go to an independent appraiser.

I guess I''m just surprised that it would need to be cleaned already?

It''s probably just remnants from when BN cleaned it.

You''d be surprised how easily these things can get dirty. Fingerprints and things like that can leave a residue. I found that since I had just handled it a little bit, a quick wipe with a soft cloth took care of it and I didn''t need a full cleaning. Try just a soft cloth first and see if you can clean it yourself. Don''t be afraid to touch the diamond. These things are made to be handled and worn, so they aren''t going to break if you touch them.

It would not be unheard of to have it delivered not sparkling clean. In fact, I received a pair of studs once that still had polishing compound all over them. Also, diamonds are magnets to dirt, grease, etc. So yes, at VS2, it''s most likely just picked up some dirt, or came that way.

Just give it a good cleaning.

Thanks for the reassurances. I really want to believe that they''re just some film that''s cleanable and not something in the diamond itself. It''s funny, though, how my worried little mind needs to come on here and post about it before actually trying to clean it.

I wash my rings every day in the ultrasonic. I notice those "table spots" sometimes right after it's cleaned and then have to rub it with a polishing cloth. Pesky buggers. lol

Sounds like water spots left over from the final cleaning from BN. Some one forgot to wipe the ring and stone with a soft cloth after cleaning.

We wear white gloves when we handle new jewelry and make our guys do it to when they come in to look, and we instruct them NOT to let their friends handle the ring until it is presented to the lady who will put her own first set of fingerprints on the ring.

My guess is the spots will wipe off without any ammonia or alcohol, breath on the stone then wipe and it will probably be clean. If you have been handling the ring, wipe your fingerprints off with a soft cloth and don''t touch any more until it is presented, let her be the one to put fingerprints on it.
