Shooting At Navy Yard

This is a huge news story, folks. I was following it on my computer. Several people are dead. There may have been four gunmen. They got into a military installation in Washington, DC and started shooting. Not everyone who did the shooting is accounted for.

Absolutely sickening news. My husband is in the Navy and even though he's been in a while, I had no idea what or where this "navy yard" was. Heard about a "shooting at the navy yard" on facebook and had to frantically google it to make sure it was not in Groton. Thankfully for myself it was not. Can't imagine those wives/girlfriends/family members who didn't get so lucky.

Gunman and 11 Victims Killed in Shooting at D.C. Navy Yard

WASHINGTON — At least 12 people, including one gunman, were killed, and the police were looking for other potential suspects, in a shooting Monday morning at a naval office building not far from Capitol Hill and the White House, police officials said.

One police officer was in surgery after being shot in an exchange of fire with a gunman, who was also killed, said Chief Cathy L. Lanier of the Metropolitan Police Department. The shootings took place at the Washington Navy Yard, in the southeast part of the city.

Senior law enforcement officials identified the shooter as Aaron Alexis, 34. A senior law enforcement official said the authorities had identified the dead gunman through his fingerprints.

Three weapons were found on the gunman: an AR-15 assault rifle, a shotgun and a semiautomatic pistol, the official said.

“It’s hard to carry that many guns, so there is some thinking that he may have taken some of them from security or whoever else he shot,” the official said.

As the day wore on, officials released conflicting information about the search for two possible gunmen.

I feel like public shootings are now gaining in popular with every crazy person out there and won't be surprized if we start seeing major changes to security in the next few months. I remember being a little girl and visiting Jordan with my mother. You go through a metal detector when entering a mall. Or in Israel if you wish to park your car in the parking garage at the mall then the army checks it for bombs first.

My heart just goes out to the victims and their famillies. A local military newspaper close to me summed it up really well that many of the victims were civilian contractors for the gov't that went overseas to support the military. They expected danger on these assignments- not checking into their desk jobs on a monday morning. I'm honestly scared what is happening these days.

;( I've lost track of how many times I've gone to bed down here, only to wake to news of another shooting in the States. It's a yuck feeling to be far away and never quite know what just might happen to a family member or friend while I'm sleeping. :nono: My thoughts are with all those affected.

How sad to have another sad event like this. My thoughts are with the families and survivors.

Thank you, TooPatient, but he was never in danger. He was too far from the trouble to be in danger. I just thought that he might be able to give me some news that I could pass along. (That was not the case or I would have done so earlier today.)

Another shooting. Sigh. I'm saddened to hear of this.

So tired of this; when will it ever end? I wish guns would finally be banned in this country. So sad for the victims' families.

Glad he was safe!

I've been following our local news on this and the story is just so sad. I can't believe he was able to access the buildings using his clearance given the state of his mental health! He was already involved in shootings in 2004 and 2010!
The news is always missing important details so I know I'm not hearing the entire story, but I REALLY hope they are looking into the background check process and whatever safeguards they have (or not!) in place for someone receiving treatments for serious mental issues.
