Anyone care to guess the specs of the "diamond" featured in the new Sherlock Homes movie?
It Appeared briefly a couple of times

I was thinking about a 5ct m/n/o/p OMC or OEC.
It was on the rounder side, but the glimpses were a bit brief for my novice eyes to determine facet structure.

I enjoyed the movie- not cannon, but definately entertainment.

That "diamond" was gorgeous!

I would guess 7ct o/p color OMC.

or perhaps a LY "fake" (that's the PS politically correct term) from ?? LOLOLOLOLOLOL!

I think it was significantly larger than 5-7cts.

it is supposed to be an indian diamond and probably ancient....it was stolen from some raj whose name escapes me. having recently seen the grace kelly 10 carat, i''m in the camp that it is over the 5-7 carat estimate as well. ancient indian diamonds [think 1600''s] weren''t faceted but engraved...saw one the one liz taylor owned. this could have been an attempt by some raj to be "modern" and thus the color and cut will not ever match modern cut and color desireability.......but would be valued for size and history.

i would take it in a minute.

however, what say you all about the what appeared to be ruby that dr. watson lost during his fight?

mz

The ruby was interesting. Looked to be about 7-8 cts with a halo of smaller diamonds (.20 ish). Very pretty and classic. It was a shame to see Watson abandon his search so quickly.

yes, the parting shot of that particular ring after he left the room.....will get the dvd on netflix and stop and pause at that particular moment to gaze one again on all that red lushness.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay bigger than 5. I''d guess they created a stone to look like a ~20 carat low-colored (P/Q? Even lower?) OMC; the narrow width of the stone was wider than the actress''s finger in the hand shot at the end of the movie, so the dimensions were likely 25mm by 20mm.

(Can anyone here estimate carat weight off of those measurements?)

Agreed. I thought they said it''s ct weight in the movie? But if no one else noticed I must be mistaken. I though it was atleast 20cts, it was MASSIVE. Who wouldn''t love that monster hanging round their neck. I especially loved the colour with those big chunky facets

DH and I saw the movie yesterday, and I had to wipe away the drool every time they showed that GORGEOUS ROCK!!!

I was thinking chunky cushion maybe? Around 10 carats or so, maybe M color?

And the ruby ring that Watson bought was beautiful! I don''t know much about colored stones, but I thought that ring was gorgeous! My heart sank when he lost it!

Seeing that huge chuncky cushion made me rethink my love for RB''s but anywho, i would say the rock was about 15-20 cts with a warmer color of maybe a J-L color... it was gorgeous, i loved it best as a necklace!

It looked exactly like the gorgeous ummmmmmm "not real things" that Wink sells, cut exactly like their Antique Cartier Cushion cut in the light yellow color (varies, but usually O/Pish). I wish they''d showed it longer though, but that was my strong impression- that it wasn''t a diamond. I''d guess something over 10cts, but past that size, they all just look ginormous to me and I wouldn''t be able to guess size.

The antiques in that movie were my favorite part of it for sure. The plot put me to sleep a bit (literally, for a bit!) but the antiques were amazingly period-appropriate- they definitely did some work making sure they used the real thing mostly, though some of the stems may have been good repros, rather than actual antiques- tough to tell sometimes at a glance on a movie screen. The opalescent vaseline glass epergne they showed right before the ring was lovely!

Now I am going to have to see the movie just to check out the diamond.

i too liked the diamond better as a pendant.........stunning on a simple gold chain.

I thought it looked like 8 carats. hehe I don''t know though; I wonder if it is real?

Agreed. It was very striking as a necklace, as a ring it was just a bit much (not that I''d say not if someone offed it to me

)- ott finger coverage and I don''t think it was the best way to showcase the stone.

I looked through the cast and crew listed on IMDB and they didn''t credit a jewler, so both the ring and the necklace were probably put together by the props or costume department.
(Or were borrowed)

Do you thing the stone in the ring was the same size as the stone in the pendant? (I thought the ring looked ginormous - bigger than the pendant)

At least 15 carats, cushion-y light straw yellow... and (dare I say it her?) too big for her finger. I agree -- much prettier as a pendant.

No envy at play there!

By the way.. if I may digress from the topic... how''d everyone like the movie?

I didn''t care for it much until about the halfway point... I think it took me that long to accept the fact that this wasn''t Sir Arthur Conan Doyle''s Sherlock Holmes.
Or maybe it''s more like Sir Arthur''s Sherlock Holmes on steroids? Anyhow, somewhere around the (marvelous) shipyard scene I started to really enjoy the story, the acting, and especially the scenery. And I love the subtle but strong female leads.

I thought the movie was okay, maybe a B?? It sounds like they left it open for another Sherlock movie . hehe I agree w/everyone that the stone looks better in a pendant!

I enjoyed the movie, but I went in expecting for it to be more of a Sherlock holmes-inspired action adventure, as opposed to a by-the-book reenactment.
I wanted to see it because I realy enjoyed Robert Downey Jr in Ironman. (I enjoy the gritty gentleman archetype)

At times the swift pace lost me and by the end I still wasn''t sure exactly how "M" was involved in the whole mess - I''ll have to see it again when it comes out on disk.

Jerry Bruckheimer loves to do sequals so I''m sure another Holmes will come out before too long.

Oh that explains a lot; I was telling hubby a lot of the lab details reminded me of CSI, well that is why! hehe Yeah, I thought a little bit of it was confusing too; I want to watch it again on dvd. Overall it was entertaining.

HI:

I thought the diamond appeared much in size like the one DiamnteBlu tried on in her shopping trip a few years ago....around 10 carats.

BTW, I thought the movie was charming!

cheers--Sharon

Here''s a picture of the 128 carat Tiffany diamond. Looks a lot like the one on her chain (minus the bird, obviously).

The Tiffany Diamond
The largest golden diamond known today is cut in a unique cushion shape. It was given 90 facets, 32 more than the standard brilliant cut, and these extra facets give the great yellow diamond the effect of smoldering fire. You can see this fabulous stone at Tiffany’s in New York City.
