So my girlfriend (at the time, fiancé now) went back to school (which is 2h away from where we live) and I began my search for a ring. I took about two weeks looking locally for a stone between .75 and 1.00c I found exactly what I was looking for eventually and learned a lot about diamonds in the process. I even went so far as to make my own homemade ideal-scope (will post pictures later).
Since the plan was to propose on our fifth anniversary, I prepared a couple of celebration gifts that would come after the proposal:
Hand drawn card and envelope (I'm a decent artist)
Bottle of her favorite wine
Box of her favorite locally made chocolate
Background:
Since she is two hours away and our anniversary fell on a weekday, she did not expect to see me this Wednesday. I led her along that we would plan on celebrating our anniversary on Friday after I got out of work.
Day of:
I took half a day from work Wednesday and another half a day Thursday so that I could drive up to surprise her when se got out of class. After arriving at her apartment, I sat outside and waited for her to walk back from class. As I saw her waling up, she was starring at my car with a confused look on her face wondering if I was really up to visit. She was thrilled when she realized that I was sitting a few yards away. We rushed towarded each other to hug before making our way back into her apartment.
I had brought a few dresses for her to choose from so that I could take her out to dinner before I proposed. Her sister helped get all of the necessary matching accessories which made my job a little easier. I told her which dress I though she should wear but told her she could wear any one she wanted but she was happy enough with my choice or just wanted to make me happy and chose the one I recommended
She got ready for dinner and I escorted her off to the restaurant and we ended up arriving just in time for our reservation. The dinner was nice and we talked a lot about the fun little milestones and events we had together over the course of the five plus years that we knew each other. When dinner was through, we headed back out toward her apartment and I stopped in a nice little park area where we had walked quite a few times before. In this park, there is a beautiful little covered wooden bridge with a nice romantic bit of lighting that worked perfect around 7:30 - 8:00 as the sun was just past setting.
On the bridge I started to say hey why don't we take a look over the side (so that we could stop and let the bridge clear of passers by) but she urged me on as at this point she knew what was coming. Luckily as we neared the end of the bridge, the coast was clear and it was just us. I got down on one knee with my jacket in had, pulled the ring out of a jacket pocket, let go of the jacket and reached out to hold her. I opened the box up and repeated my short proposal and ended with those words "Danielle, will you marry me?"
She immediated said "Of Course!"
so I stood up to put the ring on her hand. let her glance at it and then embraced her in a hug with my body slightly shaking from nervousness, excitement and many other emotions. It was funny because she was having to tell me to calm down.
We walked off of the bridge and drove back to her apartment to gather ourselves and start celebrating.
After getting off of the bridge, I told her I never actually heard a yes
so she responded with "Yes. yes. yes."
