I bought my fiancee a Platinum Engagement ring from Union Diamond....she loves it. But for the band, to get it matched with platinum, it is more expensive than we thought (guess I didn't plan ahead enough). Anyways, we went to Robbins Brothers and found a matching wedding band as white gold and it is less that half the cost. She loves it, even though it isnt platinum.

My question is:

Is it "bad" to have a platinum engagement ring, but a white gold wedding band? Will it be really noticeable, or look bad? She plans to get both rings cleaned and polished 1-2 times a year, but will they patina or wear down with a noticeable difference?

I don't want to go the "cheap" route, and regret it because it looks bad or is very noticeable.

Your thoughts?

The two metals will wear differently and they'll be different colors. Platinum develops a patina. You'll probably have to get the white gold ring rhodium plated periodically. Some people really like the shine of white gold, but it's not my preference. I have a couple of vintage/antique platinum rings that have the soft patina sheen and a vintage/antique white gold one that I just had rhodium plated. The shiny white gold reminds me of that fake chrome-look plastic, for some reason. I prefer the look and heft of platinum, but it's definitely just a preference.

I'd bite the bullet and get the platinum. Platinum and rhodium plated white gold just look different. I do have a white gold diamond ring I sometimes wear with my e-ring, but 99% of the time, I wear the platinum band. I just think it would be a mistake.

Nowadays, there's not a big difference between the price of platinum and white gold, as a matter fact gold cost a little more than platinum. Shop around more and you might find a platinum band within your budget.

Try eweddingbands.com for options. I know several PSers have used them (including myself) and have been very happy with the outcome.

Also weddingringhotline.com is very reasonable for die struck bands. Please get platinum you will reget if you dont :))

That's a per pure ounce cost, though. 18K white gold is only 75% pure and platinum is 90-95% pure; plus platinum is denser to begin with. So yea, pure is almost the same, but platinum is still more expensive because there is simply more of it in there!

I second the idea of eweddingbands.com. I used them, very happy.

Edit: I bought from them about 5 yrs ago, and the prices have doubled! As far as plat cf band vs. 18k wg cf band, plat is twice the price, yikes!
