Hubby has a tough beard and, to make the problem worse, his skin is sensitive to repeated razor strokes. He can no longer find the brand of shaving cream he used to use for tough beards (Edge brand, I believe). Electric razors are not an option as they really irritate his face. He gets best results from a manual razor. Anyone have suggestions?

Actaully, the problem may require multiple items, and here is a list of what I have to do in order to shave...

I use Gillette Foamy - Sensitive Skin. This does not work as well as the previous product which was discontinued - but I do OK with it.

Immediately after shaving: I apply alpha hydroxy serium.

Later - after it has dried - I apply a facial moisturizing cream.

I had a beard until I was introduced to the alpha hysroxy and facial cream. Take any one of those three products away - and I''ll have my beard back.

Finding which products work (i.e - I do not want to smell like a flower - that''s OK for gal - but not for me) can be challanging at times.

Best of luck.

FI uses shaving oil, and also only shaves after a shower.

My dad swears the answer is to use the highest alcoholic content aftershave he can find. I cannot understand how this can work, but he insists. I can understand how your hubby may not want to try this one out though!

I shave in the shower right towards the end.
I don''t even have to use shaving cream or a mirror.
Just go by feel.

Try Dermalogica''s shaving oil and shave at the end of the shower

My husband has a similar problem, not that his skin is so sensitive but he has a tough beard. He also shaves at the end of his shower. The moisture and steam inside the shower works to soften the stubble. When your hubby comes out of the shower, he can use something like Clinique for Men post shave healer. It''s very soothing and it will heal any razor burn or irritation pretty quickly.

DH has sensitive skin for shaving also, and he tried a shaving foam for sensitive skin from Nivea. He likes it MUCH better than Gillette products.

My DH uses Aveeno shaving gel for sensitive skin. Works great for him.

FI *loves* that giant tub of Kiehl''s Beard Buster.

X2 - My DH and I both love Aveeno shave gel - it's very creamy and it doesn't sting my skin after I shave with it.

My husband has a tough beard and sensitive skin. He uses King of Shaves in the gel or the oil.

Wow! Lots of great suggestions and new things to try. Hubby says Thanks to all for the ideas. It''s always nice to have a tried and true referral of a product instead of relying on advertisements.

this is sort of an esoteric suggestion, but he''d get the least irritation from a very sharp straight razor.

My husband is the same - he''s recently switched to using a real razor and Acqua di Parma''s shaving cream (the type you use with a brush). It''s made a huge difference - and smells amazing!
