hi all-

i took a dip in the pool with my shared prong diamond band (plat). after, i noticed that the edges/girdles of the stones felt sharp. it didn''t feel that way before. i know that chlorine doesn''t react with diamonds or platinum but i''m wondering if this is a rare case and i''ve somehow damaged my ring. i wasn''t in the pool for long (10 minutes max.). has anyone heard of damage to a diamond platinum band from being in a pool for 10 mins.? i''m paranoid that the chlorine reacted with the diamonds and that''s why they feel rough/sharp.

Just a guess, but maybe the chlorine loosened dirt or oil around the stones? Made them feel sharp again? Could you have scratched your ring against the bottom of the pool? I am not saying any of these answers are correct, just a few thoughts?

Chlorine or a pool with water can not effect or damage a Diamond is any way..., even much harder liquid acids cant...

Unless the pool water balance was way out and it turned into hydroflouric acid. If that happened all your skin would have been eaten up and you would be dead.
So since you lived to tell the tale, your diamonds are fine.

Your fingers got soft in the water and the edges felt sharper

thanks for your replies everyone. the stones still feel sharp though, even days after getting out of the pool and not having pruney fingers. ha ha.

honey22, that''s what i also thought, maybe the chlorine stripped away the oils, etc. so now the girdles feel sharp (i didn''t get near the bottom of the pool or even swim really- i basically just got in the water and hung out for about 10 mins, then got out). how do i get my band back to the way it was? nice and smooth.

You mean girdle?

I have to ask the burning question. Why do you feel your girdle?

hi ellen- yes, the girdles of the stones. i touch the sides of my band and can feel the girdles of the stones (they feel rough/sharp). it didn''t feel like that before i got in the pool...

is it more than 1 stone Sugar?
If it is one only it might be chippped - you could feel that with your finger nail

hi garry, it''s all the stones. the girdles feel sharp on both sides (where they are exposed).

Then I am afaid the only thing that changed is your awareness Sugar

You probably should not wear this ring beside others

you''re right, garry. apparently my awareness level just went up i guess. i went back to my jeweler to take a look at the other bands they have and the sides are sharp! all different carat weights and different brands of shared prong bands... all the stones feel sharp on the sides. they told me that''s just the nature of those type of settings since the girdle of the diamonds are exposed.

i''m sad because it''s my wedding band and i already see scratches on my ering... i feel like it''s getting eaten up by my band. i want to wear both rings together and my jeweler tells me i should (they say i can always get my ering polished and that since it''s platinum, the scratching is just moving metal around and that i''m not losing metal). i don''t want to jeopardize the integrity of my ering setting though (one area of the basket looks like it''s getting worn down) so i''m not sure what other solution there is. i don''t want to solder the rings together.

A very very thin spacer band between?

If the diamonds aren''t hitting other diamonds, you''re probably not doing irreparable damage wearing them together. If the jeweler says it''s OK, then it probably is... it''s true that plat usually just moves around when it gets scrached. But, if you do see serious damage to a prong, he could be wrong of course. Platinum does get worn down eventually, I see rings that are in the 100 year old range every day at work and lots of them have their designs worn off or need major prong work or reshanking due to a lifetime of wear.

I agree - it can be a tiny thin platinum spacer.
The diamonds will hack thru your eng ring - so do it now

how thin do you think i could go? i''d definitely want the spacer band to be very discrete. would 1mm be sufficient to keep the band from gnawing at the ering? also, would it be okay to purchase a spacer without having the two rings looked at prior to purchasing? i was thinking of buying from an online vendor so i''d just specify the width and the metal.

Cant answer without knowing / seeing the rings Sugar.

Pic''s?

1mm would bend very easily on its own, but it might hold its shape wedged between the others ?

quick update- i went to a local store to check out different size bands and i''m looking to get something under 2mm. anything bigger than that really takes away from my wedding set. the thin bands i tried on felt pretty sturdy--some without bling and some with.

hopefully a tiny thin band will be fine sandwiched between my two rings and not get bent out of shape. i''m just glad i have options aside from soldering!
