Hi Everyone,

Love discovering Pricescope forums!
Unfortunately, we didn''t know about it when we purchased our engagement stone.
Now we''re thinking of upgrading but want to satisfy our curiosity.
Read the diamond education parts of this site, however can''t figure out where the crown% and pavilion of our stone is on our GIA certificate? Please let us know how to locate that, as we''d like to input the info to the Holloway Cut Advisor.

Anyway, here are the specs on our stone.

Minor details of polish are not shown

We purchased this stone for $8710.00. The jeweler says they will deduct 10% from the price and credit us towards an upgrade. But the person we worked with is gone, and I don''t like anyone else at this store. It''s one of those situations where we wouldn''t feel good about the purchase if we went back there again.
I know we overpaid. Please share:
1) what price should we have paid for the stone above, for it be a fair price at the consumer level?
2) what we could expect to get this stone for now? jewelers tell me it''s not worth much resale because it''s under a carat.

Please weigh in.

Btw, My husband knew the IF clarity wouldn''t be detected to the naked eye, but it was bragging rights for him. Not that he brags, but it was something he liked to keep in his heart. So I want to explain that before all of you write in that we could''ve gone bigger if we were willing to sacrifice clarity. We knew it. But I wanted him to get what he wanted. I was fine with just a band!
Thanks in Advance. And by the way, I love my husband, and we thoroughly love this diamond. So telling us that we got ripped off would not hurt our marriage

It''s more to satisfy our curiosity than anything else. We want to learn.

Maybe you didn't pay TOO much...

Of course the time you bought your diamond would factor in a lot. Inflation being what it is and all....

GIA does not report crown and pavillion angles, but you might try to find an appraiser that can calculate those for you!

Hi Colleen,

Thanks for the response. We purchased the diamond in June 2001.
I do wonder what we'd get for it now.

Also, I wonder what type of cut we have? I know it is good based on where it falls on the depth, table, and culet specs, but have no idea if it is Ideal cut or not? Guess can't find the answer w/o getting the stone appraised for crown and pavilion?

If you purchased locally, I think you did really good in terms of price!

As for the cut, no, techinically it wouldn't be a true AGS0 (0 in polish, symmetry and proportions) because of the vg/g rating. But it may very well have AGS0 proportions... nobody can tell without having crown and pavilion informations...

The resepctive angles are not listed on the GIA cert... by deafult. You could only have them measured if the stone is taken off - not worth the trouble.

Given the proportions of the stone, there are good chances that the thing just rocks

You can still use an Ideal Scope on the mounted stone for fun or visit an appraiser for an opinion.

All in all, the price is quite good, even among stones listed online - which is allot to say. Did the jeweler mention some reason for a discount? Not that I need to know - but you mention you would not want to pass by again...

I would expect to pay 10k on this. As for the resale value... who knows? It depends where and hw you sell more than anything. It is true that many would go for "1ct or more" but one can only guess how many shoppers would also fall for the sales mantra "get it a bit under 1ct s that you avoid the price jump". You have quite a special stone - and these top grades seem to be in short supply at present (at least if one takes the reports on the average stock on the market for good). This ring would always be a better candidate than most for being sold to it's next owner.

The odds of recovering 7800+ on anything but the trade in are somewhere between slim and none unfortunatly.
1/2 of that would be the most to count on from any other source unless you got real lucky.
The resale value on diamonds for consumers truly sux.

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for your opinions so far.
We were told when we purchased the stone whenever we did an upgrade, that 10% would be an automatic deduction from the stone's original purchase price of $8710. They explained they do this for every stone, to cover paperwork and "service".

Based on all the previous posts, am I correct in assuming losing 10% on the $8710 credit towards an upgrade is a good ratio? Because if we try to sell it to a different jeweler, and get only 50% to 80% of it's purchase price, I'm positive my husband would elect to keep this stone.

purchase price - 10% is fairly common and isnt that bad compared to what you can get elsewhere.

There are some vendors that will apply the full purchase price from them on an upgrade to another diamond purchased from them.
Like anything else you can try and deal and get them to go up on it.
