This sight has been very helpful in deciding what type of diamond I want to buy for an engagement ring.

However, I don''t see too much on settings.....

What I have seen is alot of people don''t like setting the stone in a setting if it''s not from their store.

I''m just curious what most people do. The retail stores seem to have countless settings while the online vendors, not as much and ''their'' settings. This is fine and I''ve found some comprable to the one''s she likes, but I''m just curious on feedback from others.

if you are working with PS vendors it is more common for someone to buy a stone one place and have it shipped to another vendor for setting. But you are correct, a lot local places don''t like to do it. I always suggest just getting the stone and setting at the same place if possible, makes things so much easier.

no, they don''t like to do it and it can take awhile but there is a real benefit in having a large selection and being able to actually try the rings on in person. it just depends on what is important to you. i''ve experienced it both ways and each has it''s own pros and cons. the bottom line is, if you find a setting that you LOVE in a store and you can''t find the exact ring online, GET IT FROM THE STORE. you are just setting yourself up for disappointment by trying to replicate what you have already seen and love.

Well, vendors such as Pearlman''s and Good Old Gold carry many different designers. They can order any setting from the designers they carry, not just the ones pictured on the site. I agree that it is easier to buy both the stone and setting from the same place, but I did not. I bought the stone online and had it set locally.

Well, here''s the one''s she likes, doesn''t necessarily have to be a designer, want''s a 1.5 Carat Asscher but will setlle for 1.2+ until upgrade... but some of these are just so damn expensive.

That first A Jaffe you posted reminded me of a similar A Jaffe that pearlman''s has in their closeout section and the price includes the matching wedding band, i don''t know if the head can be changed to fit an asscher though but it might be worth a call or email to ask, plus it never hurts to try and bargain a bit espeically if you buy the stone from them as well. They carry A Jaffe and are very competitive in pricing so you might as for a quote in the ring style you linked as well.

yeah thats a good link, similar, unfortunately their asschers start at $23K

Whose asschers start at 23K?

If you are referring to Pearlmans... they list hardly any stones on their site... but they can get whatever you want in for you... you just need to give them a call and ask them for what you want-- they''ll send you pics and stuff to help you decide. A woman on here just bought a stunning cushion (one of the nicest I''ve ever seen on here of it''s type) from them... and it was never listed on their site. And you can always buy a setting from Pearlmans and have it set with your own stone if you find it elsewhere. So I wouldn''t worry about what''s listed on their site... or think that its indicative of what they can get you. Best of luck!

I ditto gypsy if you are talking about Pearlmans. Call them, ask for Bill, tell him your budget and what you are trying to do and they will get it done. Of course, finding a stone elsewhere and sending it to them for the setting is done often enough as well and wouldn''t be a problem at all.

I have to pipe in! Bill''s the greatest. He is so patient and never dismissive. Although I haven''t received my rings yet (still working out some setting details), I feel confidant that it will all work out in the end.

The other factor I feel like I need to mention is that if you are planning an upgrade already, I would get a temporary setting. When you are looking at settings with other diamonds, the setting may not be able to take a larger diamond in the center. Sometimes they can remove the head and replace it with a larger one especially if it is a solitaire. But it really makes more sense to get an inexpensive setting now that can be replaced later with the dream setting when you get the upgrade diamond. Alterations in a setting may end up being an expensive hassle.
