Visited about 5 places for settings this past weekend for a 1.62 Square Cushion...
Went to these in San Francisco:
- Shreve (nice, some were pricey, great customer service)
- Lang's Antiques (just visited for the heck of it =P)
- Union Street Goldsmiths (fabulous settings, nice people, leaning towards them)
- David Clay Jewelers (great place, great looking settings, but WHOA, price was $$$$)
- Simayof (did not like the pushy salesperson)

So, i narrowed it down to either Shreve or Union Street Goldsmiths...

Shreve had nice settings, but not exactly what i think she would want...
Union St. Goldsmiths was almost on the money with a few of their settings...

So, i think i may do a semi-custom design (not totally from scratch, is what i mean)

I would like to go the Shreve route, since they have been in business A LONG TIME, and i believe if i have any issues they would certainly take care of it during the lifetime of the ring.

Anybody do any custom work at Shreve or Union St. Goldsmiths? I'm worried that Shreve doesn't have a ton of experience with custom... thoughts?

well... made an appt with Shreve tomorrow to see more about a custom cushion setting...

i figure if i get a bad vibe... i can walk away...

If you''re willing to go to San Carlos, I highly recommend our jeweler Geoffrey''s....he did the custom setting for my FI and I and did an amazing job!!!

Really? I saw something they did in yellow gold and it was horrible. Clunky and uneven. Can you post a photo? Is that the ering you just posted? Because it is beautiful! They must have more than one jeweler!

Well, i really liked the personal service i got right when i got there. The store manager helped me and he knew what he was talking about right away.

I know that if it isn''t right, that Shreve will make it right, since i have heard through many people that their customer service is awesome...

i have also heard many things about geoffrey''s too.

I had msmisty''s ring made there: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/msmisty-got-engaged.91666/

Some more pics at the top of page two: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/msmisty-got-engaged.91666/page-2

I don''t know who the exact jewelers were, but Geoffrey and Steven were the ones who helped us with the design and waxing.

here is the link to my ering

hehehe....looks like my FI beat me too it! =P

I''d actually just go and see if any of the jeweler''s custom pieces are in-line with the style and quality you''re looking for. If possible, go in there with a basic idea and maybe some photos or a sketch. Talk to the jeweler about what aspects you like, what you want change, and see how well they understand what you''re ltrying to accomplish. If you''re not sure about a certain area, ask them for their opinion, see if you agree with their suggestions. If you disagree, say what your concerns are and see if they understand your ideas. And so on and so forth.... You don''t necessarily want someone that says ''yes'' to everything. They''re supposed to be experts and should know what''s gonna work and what isn''t gonna work.

Basically, just see if there''s any working chemistry. If you find a jeweler that you can communicate with, it''ll make the whole process more reassuring.
