Sorry...first post and I hope I am in the right section...a drop nervous but plan on proposing soon...almost all is done except the band :)

I just bought a 1.49 vs1 i heart/arrow for my girlfriend...she is petite and has small hands...I snatched a ring from her and I know that she actually has her left hand as a size 4 and her right hand as a size 4.5...she told me a while back that when she gets married she would want a wedding band on her left hand (4.0) and the engagement ring on her right hand (4.5)...but until she gets married she would wear the engagement ring on her left hand (4.0)....my question is what to do :)

Should I get 4.5 and just get something to hold it in place...should I get 4.25?

Next question...I know debated a lot...but platinum or white gold...at this point I know she is not allergic to gold and I also am not concerned with the diff. in price that much (since I know platinum will make her happy)...but if I have to resize it cause of the above I think it will be a pain....Any thoughts?

Final question...does gold hold the diamond as well as platinum (assume prongs are done correctly of course in both cases is platinum holding it better)

Thanks so much everyone.

hey joelang

welcome to ps!
it's no problem getting a ring sized so just get the ring in the size that will fit her left hand. wg vs. platinum is a personal preference. i have, and like, wg but your gf may prefer plat. maybe you could sneak in a little talk about it.

can't wait to see what you get!

Thank you so much :)

In regards to re-sizing is it better to get the larger size and just put something in there to hold for now...or get the smaller size and get more added to it...although I would spend the money for plat ring I don''t like wasting money and I know adding to a plat ring is expensive and not all jewelers do it?

Resizing plat is no problem. I''ve done it many times. I like the patina and weight of plat in my weddingring. I wear a wgold right hand ring, and liket that, too. It''s just a matter of what you like.

with such a small change in size, the pricing will be the same either way. it''s not going to matter whether you go up or down. hopefully you will get a perfect fit (or that your engagement is really short!) and she won''t have to worry about it much. a ring that doesn''t fit properly is not fun to deal with.

Great...thank you! Now off to find a plan B for a proposal...Plan A got miffed :-(

I would get her the size that fits her left hand so she can comfortably wear it right away. I also prefer platinum because I like the weight and it doesn''t yellow over time. Even if you went with WG, I would have the prongs done in platinum for safety reasons.

I concur that sizing should not be a problem (depending on what type setting you get, of course). The jeweler should be able to advise you. Many jewelers will size once for free. If in doubt go a bit bigger so she can at least put it on her hand right away. I prefer plat but it is personal, both are very nice. There are tons of threads debating the merits of each.

My first suggestion has to do with the beginnings of a wonderful relationship. If she wants to wear the ring on her left hand first and then move it to her right hand, do not try to talk her out of her plan. All too many folks try to change who and what their spouses are.
On to the ring. If you can afford platinum go for platinum. It is without question the finest of the white metals. It is a dream to work with for the jeweler and stone setter. It resists abrasion better than any other precious metal and it is hypo-allergenic. Most white gold jewelry manufactured in the USA is alloyed with nickel which can lead to nickel allergies.
If the engagement ring does not have many diamonds running down the side of the shank it should not be difficult to re-size. With the new laser welders a skilled jeweler should have no problem adding 1/2 a size to the ring so that she can move the ring to the right hand.
She should keep in mind that if she is right handed she will tend to use her right hand more than her left hand. This will cause more wear and tear on the ring and put her diamond at greater risk. For this reason most people wear their engagement ring on their left hand.

Hello there,

First, I would definitely go for platinum. I''ve got both platinum and white gold rings and I much prefer the look of pt. Plus, I have personally found that pt tends to make the stone look whiter. White gold, after wear-and-tear, will look a bit yellow and that interferes somehow (at least in my personal opinion) with the look of the stone. Pt is easy to re-set/ re-size, i''ve done it a few times and it is not expensive (compared to the cost of the setting itself). However (and this is a small "however"), pt is a little softer, both my wedding band and my husband''s have "broken" (for want of a better word) and have had to be re-soldered.

Second, the sizing would depend on the setting itself, ie. width of the band as well as the thickness and style. I have rings of sizes (HK sizes ranging from 9.50 to 10.50), all for the same finger. One would have to put the ring on, wear for a while and then decide on the final size. In fact, re-sizing up or down is not troublesome at all. As mentioned, I''ve done it a few times.

Cheers.
