Hi everyone. . . New here so please forgive if in the wrong area. Recently engaged and did custom design on ring...except jewelers interpretation and our idea of what ring should look like did not coincide. Long story short, I want to change the setting of my stones. I have 3 stones, set in bezel and the jeweler has the stones set so that they are flush with the band. I thought that the stones should be set above the band but still in bezel. Now he says that he has to make a completely new ring. . . Is this true or can he somehow just raise the setting (my thought was since the stones are all bezeled he could separate the bezel from the band and set the stones higher by re-welding).
Thanks for your help

My guess is a whole new ring. Its too bad you guys miscommunicated - ask to see the wax before he casts it this next time. Bezel settings are *usually* (though obviously not always) wanted because they can make the ring very flush. If what you want is a bezel that sits high above, I really have no idea what you''re even talking about.

I think the "answer" here is that is it less labor intensive to just start over, than to attempt altering the original design.

I am interpreting your "resolution" to be adding a section to what is already there. That would probably end up with a high probability of appearing "sloppy" in the finshed product.

A lot of other factors come into play here as to how the first item was made. Was it made in a wax and then cast or were the bezel sections purchased and then soldered together, and to the shank of the ring? Also the type of metal has some bearing on this as well.

How high do you want the bezels to be?

Thanks everyone for the advice. . . first problem is that because the ring is custom we used other pieces from his collection to base our design on. We specifically wanted the stones to sit like another ring he had, but instead of prongs we wanted the stones bezeled. The jeweler created the whole design and cast it, the ring is 18k gold. I dont want the bezels to sit on top of the band, but right now the issue for me is that the ring doesn''t even look like an engagement ring (we didnt use traditional white diamonds, the center stone is a black diamond) because the face of the stone is completely flush with the band. What we requested was that the stones sit slightly higher than the band, so that the focus is first on the stones and then the band. I am attaching a photo of what I hoped the bezel to look like.

If you discussed this with the jeweler, generally he should make it over - as he didn''t follow your directions.

Since he cast it, I would assume that somewhere along the line he showed you the wax of the casting????

If he did, and you approved the wax design, that might make things "different" as far as what his responsibility is to remake the item.

Thanks!! You have been very helpful. . .and we were never shown the casting...that definitely would have stopped the issue before it got to this point!!
