Hi all,
I am looking to set my plain 4 prong 18k rose gold mount with a new coloured stone.
The ring used to house a PoH cut (cut corner square) which measured 4.8 x 4.8x 3.4.

I am hoping for advice on exactly what will fit in this setting? Will I have to get only a square/cushion shape?
And will I be able to stretch the setting to fit something larger than the above measurements? if so, how ,much bigger could I go?

thanks in advance!

AJ-

I hope you don''t mind, but I just read the other thread and got the link to your SMTR thread, so I''m posting it so everyone can see the setting:

As to your question, yes, you can definitely reuse it and I would venture to say that you could put either a RB or Princess cut into that. Most 4-prong RB settings are 4 prongs arranged in a square, just like yours, so it should work just fine. I''m not sure how big you can go, though. It doesn''t look like there is much room for growth, so you''d be stuck with a RB of 4.8mm diameter, and I can''t remember what size that is, but I''m guessing closer to 0.6ct maybe. Hopefully somebody else will come by with some more info on large that can go for you.

That''s a gorgeous setting, and I''m glad its going to be used again!

Thankyou Dockman,
I was going to post a photo of the empty setting, but on second thought the thread is probably more useful, cheers for linky!

I''m hoping for a cushion or another square cut, the only reason I ask about size is I''m having a bit of trouble finding a coloured stone in the 0.6 range!
Thx again for your input, you have become quite the avid helpful PS''er!

Are there any jewelers that can comment on the size issue?

Can you ask the jeweler where you bought the ring how much bigger the stone can be? Oh I love the idea of a rhr; that is a beautiful setting!!!

You''re very welcome AJ, and thanks for the compliment!

I just had a little brainstorm, and I''m not sure if its possible, but could a jeweler just add a bit of rose gold to your setting and extend the prongs a bit? I''m honestly not very well versed in rose gold, so I don''t know if they would be able to match the shade or not, but it wouldn''t take much more material to increase the size of those prongs to be large enough to fit a 1.5 or 2 ct stone. From a really quick search, it looks like a 2ct cushion is roughly only 7x7x4 ish, so they would only have to add about 2mm total, so only 1mm to each prong and only go up about 0.6mm. That''s not very far, so it might be possible. They may also be able to thin the material to stretch it out, but that would compromise the structural integrity of the setting, so I would advise against that.

Anyway, it was just a thought. Hopefully a real jeweler comes to the rescue!

Hey skip, cheers for checking in.

You''ve hit the nail on the head - I''m hoping thats what they can do without too much trouble.
I would love if anyone can give advice if this is possible, but failing that I will have to start the hunt for a local jeweler..
