So I have picked a stone and am now looking for the perfect setting. I really like the Stuller Solstice setting - particularly the platinum, 6 prong, medium height, peg.

I have just one major concern at this point – in looking at the Stuller website it seems that they make this particular model only in 1ct and 1.5ct sizes. I am a bit worried that the 1.28 stone would not fit either of these particularly well. What do you think? Is there a way to get the Solstice head made closer to the 1.28 size (perhaps 1.25)? I am not a big fan of being able to see so much room around the base of the stone, and am worried that that would be the case if the 1.50 size were used.

I''d really appreciate all your help on this, as I''m really trying to get moving on this so that I can actually propose relatively soon...

p.s. this forum is really quite amazing, and I have voraciously read a ton of it. But I never imagined that picking an engagement ring would be so complicated...

unless you are going completely custom it is common for settings to have a range in the size stone it can take. The one that is made for a 1-1.5 carat stone will fit your stone just fine.

Thanks for your reply. I guess if it were made for the range between 1-1.5 I''d be less worried, because 1.28 is pretty close to the midpoint (1.25). But the setting is made either for a 1ct or a 1.5 ct, meaning my 1.28 stone is pretty far from either size. Any other thoughts would be much appreciated.

nybtsia,
that is a normal range. they will slightly adjust the prongs to fit the stone. you are talking tiny mm increments so a 1.3 is really not that far for a 1 carat or a 1.5 at all.

ETA: many designer settings even sell them based on the same increments. try not to worry.

what I have been told was that if a setting is made for a particular size diamond,,, if it is only the head and it sounds like it, then they would find a head to fit your size stone so it wouldn''t be completely custom made, ask them to put the diamond as low as you want or high or medium, this should not be too complicated of a fix... best thing to do is call them to get more of a clearer answer though.
