I would want to shave down the prongs on the WF as much as possible and perhaps make them claw.

Not sure if the modification will then make it a custom job. Have you considered this? The prongs are slightly more refined.

Thank you for the reply - that is a great option, however, out of my price range for the setting. This is meant to be a temp. setting for awhile until we can upgrade it.

The one I pasted above is a 6 prong classic that is fairly basic. I don't think they mind shaving the prongs to make them thinner and I can make it a claw too if I wish. Does anyone else have any suggestions about minor changes I could make?

Thanks!

What is absolute max you're willing to pay for this temp setting?

Re: the whiteflash setting, maybe try to get aCAD of what they're intending to do and post here. It may add some money to do the changes, but it might be worth it to make sure it's right. Not sure what they charge to do a CAD, but it's probably non-refundable.
Also ask to see if they have photos of similar changes that they've been asked to do on that setting.

Also, what's your timeline? You may be able to find a used solitaire setting that fits your stone nicely, and just get it polished up.

This is quite nice from Ritani for $440. http://www.ritani.com/engagement-rings/solitaire-diamond-tulip-cathedral-engagement-ring-in-14kt-white-gold/5336
You can go to a local ritani dealer and they'll send it to ritani to get it set. Also Pearlman's jewelers (in Michigan, but online as well http://www.pearlmansjewelers.com/) works with them, and they're super nice. I spoke with the owner like way after hours once and he's extremely helpful. The staff was the most pleasant of any retail outlet I've ever emailed.

Ritani has a few others that might fit the bill AND look nice while doing it. I don't think the WF one will be a good solution, even if temporary and modified. Too much hassle about nothing.

stuller.com and Adwar are large casting houses that "all" jewelers have access to. You could look through their settings and pick something in there, and many of those will cost in roughly the same ballpark as the first 6-prong setting you showed. Stuller's paper catalogs are easier to look through than the online site. The Ann Harrington site carries a lot of Stuller's and it's easy to navigate. Stuller's X1 gold or whatever it's called is a whiter 14k alloy that is supposed to stay whiter without having to be rhodium plated. Stuller makes a heavy Tiffany, a Solstice series, one called Octet, etc. The Octet can be "clawed" by someone who knows how.

If you pick a peg head shank, then you can combine a head you like with a shank style you like and have more style options.

The tulip is quite nice and WF is a Ritani Auth dealer...I am having trouble finding real life pics of it though...know of any? Thanks!

Was able to get some...just a bit worried the band is too thick...

Ya it does look a little thick relative to some skinny ones and the picture does it no favors. But it's still just 2.5mm... roughly equivalent to a Tiffany solitaire thickness. I've seen a bunch of 2.2 mm and I personally think it looks very skinny. 2.5 is just right for my taste.

The image is magnified and it seems that the Tiffany Classic knife edge is also 2.5mm at the top and tapering down to 2mm and the 6 prong is 2.7mm tapering down to 1.9mm.

Given the choices I think the Ratani is the best option. Any final thoughts or suggestions?

Thank you very much for the suggestion. I think I would prefer for various reasons to stick with WF setting the diamond. I have read there are setting risks invovled if set elsewhere. Thanks again!

From what I understand Ritani is very reasonable about customizations. Ask them if how much it would cost to slim it down to 2mm.

The link I provided above is for a 2.0mm setting. This one: http://www.ritani.com/engagement-rings/solitaire-diamond-tulip-cathedral-engagement-ring-in-14kt-white-gold/5336,, which is the initial one is 2.5mm...seems that they either recently introduced the 2.0mm one or I missed it before.

I did speak to them about slimming the 2.5mm one down but was told they do not customize that series (based on SKU). I think I would prefer 1.7mm...but now that I see a 2.0mm one I cannot imagine there is too much of a difference between 1.7mm and 2.0mm to the naked eye.

That said, I'm not sure why the 2.5mm is cheaper than the 2.0mm one...

Got some pics of the 2.0mm one from Ritani - what do you guys think? Too thick or just right?

I think it looks very nice, but it's tough to tell without some point of reference. Having the right width shank is all about balance among finger width, stone size, and band width. I think 2mm with a 7mm stone is great.

That stone appears to be about the same size as yours, and I like it.

How's this?

After much consideration I think I am going to go with the classic 6 prong from WF ( http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/6-prong-tiffany-style-solitaire-engagement-ring-582.htm )

We liked the Ritani above, however, not such a big fan of the bar that goes across just above the middle of the diamond as well as the double claw.

WF said they can claw the prongs and make the band about 2.01mm near the top and 1.9mm at the bottom.

Before I give the go ahead I thought I would check to see if anyone has an any more opinions on the WF and the changes they will make for me or and other recommendations for settings?

Thanks!

I love it. I think the 2mm is perfect. Seriously.

Thank you so much Gypsy! Does really mean a lot! I can't wait to get the final product.

1.22 H VS2 ACA in a ~2.0mm 6 prong WG solitaire :)
