Setting Help for AVR

Okay so I got the perfect-for-me engagement diamond. It's a 1.24 I SI2 AVR.

I have probably looked at a thousands settings. I thought I had narrowed it down to Amavida but turns out the settings had too many diamonds that were way too microscopically small. I found a Gottlieb that was close but was just a bit to modern looking.

So I decided to do what I didn't want to do and I went to a local jewelry maker who has a decent reputation. I gave him pictures and asked him to add milgrain. He said no problem. We discussed larger side diamonds and he suggested we get rid of the cut-outs round the bezel diamonds because he said they "cheapened the look" of the ring. He also said they were difficult to keep clean.

I appreciate your thoughts on this setting as well as your thoughts on the milgrain (should it go down the sides or around the diamond bezel?) and (possible lack of) cut-outs, etc.

If you have seen any pre-made similar settings please send them my way as well.

I love your diamond and I think this setting design is beautiful! I do vote for milgrain for sure on the bezels and maybe on the edge of the shank. The engraving is lovely on the sides.

Are you sure your local guy can do justice to this ring? I know there are some good benches here and there, but I would want to be 100% sure he can do this style ring well. Have you seen their hand engraving?

That ring needs a very skilled bench to replicate. I would not be surprised if he suggested getting rid of the cut outs because to create that ring would likely mean hand fabrication. I don't think it can be done with casting. Is your jeweler skilled in this style? Have you seen samples of very similar designs and styles? Examples of their milgrain?

I am a cynic. Honestly, I cant think of very many times when a PSers used a local jeweler for a custom job and it turned out exactly like they hoped.

Okay, Dreamer and I are thinking the same thing. I'd use either Singlestone or Victor Canera for this ring if I were having it made. And yes, it needs the cut-outs.

i third keeping the cutouts they add so much character. i personally would fine the prongs too chunky but i like super delicate. i would LOVE it with double claw prongs :)

You guys are the best! Thanks so VERY much. I did not want to get rid of the cut-outs either as I thought they added so much as well.

This jeweler sends off engraving and milgrain to New York to be done. He used to work for Tiffany. I have seen some of his work. He shows it under his microscope and it is nice. I went to him to get a price point. Just to test the waters ... to get my feet wet and prepare my brain for possible custom work.

And yes, I agree I didn't love the chunky prongs either. I was thinking double or claw. It's the one thing I was going to change. Do the vendors you mentioned do good work at a reasonable price? I'm on a budget.

Good work on a ring like that will cost. It is hard to estimate how much but I am sure over $3000 and possibly $4k. I'd ask Singlestone and Victor Canera for quotes.

I actually like the prongs because they are appropriate for that period. But double claws would of course be beautiful.

I agree on what the other ladies said however I would add in to get quotes from:

Steven Kirsch
Engagment Rings Direct
23rd Street Jewelers

And yes keep the cut outs! I personally love this ring and it will look stunning with an AVR. :lickout:

I checked out Singlestone and I'm still wiping the drool off my face. WOW!!!! Gorgeous stuff! I think I'm in love. Did I mention budget... What budget??? I must sink back to earth and get my head back on my shoulders!

Singlestone also had some things one their site that I liked so I just sent them an email with some pictures of what I'm looking for/the direction I would like to go. I may send something to VC too.

I will check out the other sites you all suggested as well.

Thank God my DL is so patient. I have dragged him into 153.5 jewelry stores. He is patient and gives his opinion but is willing to go with whatever I decide. He said I am the one who has to wear it. As for him, he has picked out a $2500 diamond wedding band. Maybe I will get it for him early and he can have an "engagement" ring too!! Who says a man can't get an engagement ring?? :naughty:

Look at THIS! I think it is AMAZING! ... it has a cut out, milgrain, little bezel set diamond on the side .. Oh MY! Oh MY! I think my AVR would be really happy in something similar to this...

Single stone's website is my all time favorite. So glad you've caught the fever. :)

Check out their work on 1st Dibs and Grennwich Jewelers for more details and pricing information too.

Yes, Singlestone is quite something! I am glad you looked before making a decision!
