Hello,

I'm planning on purchasing a diamond in a few weeks and have narrowed down my choice of vendors to Good Old Gold and White Flash. I have my eye on a couple of diamonds over at GOG but would like to set it in a WF signature setting, the Legato with pave. It seems that GOG's settings are more expensive than WF in the same metal. I've researched extensively on settings and I've even visited the idea of doing a three-stone, but I keep coming back to the Legato setting.

What would you do? Should I send the diamond over from WF to GOG for GOG to set, or vice versa (have WF send the setting to GOG?) Are there other options?

I appreciate any input you may give. :)

you would send the stone to whiteflash to have it set. They will set a stone for you if its certified. I know there i a fee for this though, 100 dollars or more, i cant remember exactly.

It it a branded cut from GOG you want to buy? I feel like gabriel and co has some settings not exactly the same, but similar to the legato, if you wanted to save some money. I know good old gold sells them for less than the website says.

this one is similar i feel like

BUT, if the legato makes your heart sing, i say go for it, youd want to send the stone to WF

I really like that Gabriel and Co., especially the profile. I don't know, I really love the lines of the Legato. Just something about it ... sings to me.

The stone will be a H&A RB. I actually asked GOG for a quote for a few settings of similar styles to price-compare with WF, and there was a bigger difference there than the difference between GabrielCo/ WF... I really want to one-stop shop at GOG. I wonder why the price is different than what the website says?

Thank you for all of the info you provided. :)

Have you looked at the WF ACA line? They are all super ideals and beautiful stones, I'm sure that they could make some recommendations for you. Most vendors will not insure an outside stone during the setting process, therefore you will need to insure the stone in case of damage while it is set and pay for the shipping back and forth. Not a deal breaker but a PITA IMO. I'm actually not even sure that WF will set outside diamonds anymore? Have you checked? It sounds like you love the Legato so I would ask WF to find you a great stone to put into it. Would you like us to make some stone suggestions?

edit: It appears that WF will set a stone purchased somewhere else so long as it's accompanied by a GIA or AGS report and you sign a release of liability form. Again, I'd suggest working with WF to find you a great stone to go into the setting.

Thanks for the info, Christina.

Yes, shipping around is a PITA, I totally agree, (and nerve wracking). I was looking at a few ACA stones but see that GOG has similar stones (similar HCA scores) but higher color, bigger size. Does the HCA score apply to all size stones or is there a threshold or size range for which it performs most pertinently?

My hubby is giving me full control over my upgrade(s), so I want to be sure I do this right... with a budget of $40k for 2016, I'd like to find a vendor I will upgrade my current diamond project with. I'm not sure if I will upgrade again after my upgrade in 2016, but who knows. Do you like WF best?

No stone size doesnt relate to the HCA .25 or 2.5, it doesn't matter. HCA predicts light performance based on the info entered and actual Ct weight isn't considered. Anything under 2 passes, so it doesn't matter if one stone scored a .9 and the other a 1.9, both would be considered worthy of further investigation. I have never personally worked with GOG so I cant offer an opinion other than there have been many many satisfied PSers who have and I would absolutely trust Jonathons insight. That's said there have also been many many happy WF customers and they too have gorgeous stones and I certainly couldn't say that one had better diamond options than the other. In the real world it often comes down to price and which vendor has available the stone that best fits both our needs and our budgets. However since one vendor has the setting you want I would consider contacting them and explaining the situation to them, it may be that they have additional inventory available that hasn't been posted on their website or that they would be willing to offer a similar stone for a similar price. Who knows? But it never hurts to ask.

Thanks, Christina. :)

I'm excited to hear what you decide! Good luck. Both vendors are fabulous so I know you're going to end up with a fantastically beautiful ring. Cant wait to see it! =)
