I have seen on websites how many settings have a maximum diamond size. Usually somewhere around 2 carats. Why is this? If I get a custom setting made, what considerations are there for larger (approx. 2.5 carat) diamonds? I want a fairly simple x-prong solitaire setting. I think I want the band to be in the 3.0 mm to 3.2 mm range. Is there any reason why a band such as this would be too narrow for a 2.5 carat diamond? Are there any other things to consider when having a setting custom designed for a larger diamond?

I''m not sure this is the reason but I believe it is because a large stone on a very thin band has a tendency to spin around the finger, rather than staying put. Perhaps you''ve seen women who''s rings always seem to be cock-eyed with the stone to one side of their finger? That can happen when the ring is too big, but also if the stone is too large and the shank is very thin. That said, my stone is about 2.5 ctw on a very thin band (I''d say it''s less than 2mm for sure but it''s old so that was the style back then) and when my fingers are fatter is sits fine, when my fingers are thinner it sometimes spins a little bit. My experience is that if the ring fits your finger and isn''t too big, it will probably stay in place...

I think your design is very possible and will look great on a 2.5 carat round. I think a 3mm shank should be fine. I think a lot of the reason people don''t carry stock setting for this size range is that there aren''t that many diamond owners in this range. I think 1 carat, 1.5, etc are more standard sizes.

2.5 ct is hardly large enough that you'd have to make special considerations for the setting. I'd imagine people only have to "worry" about band thickness, prongs, etc. once they get into the 4ct+ range. Like kcoursolle said, it's mostly an issue of "stock" size accomodations (just like some jewelers/websites don't stock ring sizes below a 3 or over a 9 simply because the demand for those sizes is much smaller).

3mm is also by far "thick enough" for any size stone (within reason, I assume) and especially not any problem at all for under 5ct.

Don't worry about it

The band will be fine with your diamond. Mine's 2mm at its thinnest and doesn't spin much.
