When do they apply? What''s the average amount of one? What PS vendors have them and under what circumstances?

I just got a quote for a custom ring and the setting fee was $250 for an outside stone, or $70 if I buy one from them. That seemed high to me but maybe not? I have no experience to go off of. They said it would be to cover them in case something happened while setting, but isn''t that what insurance is for?

So confused. Can anyone clarify? Thanks so much!

There is generally a setting fee when you don''t buy the stone and setting from the same vendor. It is a little unusual for them to charge a setting fee when you are buying both from one place. I guess they apply the $70 toward their insurance premium! I think it would be better business to just bulid in the setting fee to the cost of the setting if they are selling both the stone and the setting, though.

Most jewelers do charge setting fees; we do so when we are setting someone else''s stone or using someone else''s setting.

When a customer purchases both the stone and setting from us, we waive setting fees.

That's what I thought too.

Allison, what's WF's setting fee, if I may ask?

I paid 150 to have my outside stone set by WF

James Allen would have charged me $100 to set their diamonds in an outside setting (for small stud earrings); the charge was waived for purchasing both diamonds and settings from them.

Today I had my center stone removed from my ArtCarved setting and put into a new setting not purchased from that jeweler (new setting is from e-weddingbands.com). They charged me $45.00 for that service. This is the same jeweler I bought the ArtCarved setting from and they didn''t charge me to set my diamond at that time.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the responses everyone. $250 seems to be the winner as the highest, but I''m stuck with it because the jeweler can''t get the same stones I''ve been looking at. So at least I''ll save there...
