for those who like or are experienced with EC, what is the best setting to show off a longer ratio with cut corners? bezel? type of prongs-claw? Thank you as always for your input! I would like the band to be a very thin and delicate leaf design but that's all I know thus far.

I'm not experienced but a true EC admirer. I love the double eagle claws. Somehow compliments and contrasts with the sharp lines of the EC. I've never been a fan of the corner v prongs on step cuts. I think with the Cathy Waterman type leafy design, the eagle claws would look lovely.

EC lovers qualify lol :-) thanks for your input!

are you going for art deco?? If so, you know what i love? Tab prongs! Poorly done ones are a bit :knockout: but well done ones are

Oh love those too!
Yes -Art Deco!
Thanks Niel

It sounds like you want prong advice. Not setting advice. It depends on the size of your stone and it's corners. Tab and double claw prongs can COMPLETELY over power and over take a 1 carat EC.

And both are REALLY fracking hard to get right. So you need a SUPER good bench for either. Especially on a 'normal' sized stone as they have to be super dainty to look right.

One single well done claw prong is often the best choice for 1 carat-ish ECs.

If you are going to go custom and want tabs or claws stick to a vendor like ERD or Steven Kirsch for the settings. Someone with a TON of prong experience and a good eye for detail and proportion.

Thanks gypsy. I had gone to see 1 carat EC at GOG two weeks ago and realized I needed to increase my budget so I could go up a bit in weight and also ratio of the stone. So I haven't requested GOG to call in the next set of stones because I have been trying to read through everything to get the best education. I "think" I am pretty sure of the parameters now I'm working with. I have a loose quote for a custom setting from GOG but I know it's kind of putting the cart before the horse until I finalize a stone. It seems like the stone will be just over
8mm x 5mm. I am not clear on who exactly does the custom designing for GOG, will have to find out.

Thanks for your time and input!

GOG has multiple benches depending on the design. I would ask for multiple pictures of the prong work from the actual bench they will be using, regardless of what style you go for. But ESPECIALLY if you go for double claw or tab prongs. And in that case you want pictures of exactly the type of prongs you are asking for. So if you want tab prongs, you would want tab prong pics from that bench.

Regarding GOG's stone search for you. Don't constrain them too much. Don't give them table and depth and so on. Just tell them you want: eyeclean, X color, X approximate length to width ratio and FABULOUS performance and brightness. And you want a video of the choices they call in for you.

They are REALLY good with finding emerald cut and asking for more than that will hinder not help you.

Thanks, yes I trust them and will definitely not give too many details like depth etc - but my preferred parameters I "think" are ratio of 1.45-1.65, cut corners if possible, G-I in color, VS2 or better. Still trying to finalize the exact budget so I have been searching GIA stones on the database that fall within the above. Any other advice is welcomed- thanks!

I hope it didn't sound like I was trying to persuade you into a particular setting. I was trying to use that as an example of nice tabs.

Do you have a picture of your setting idea? I just think tabs go with a Art Deco look. Which I assumed that's what you were going for. Claws I would do if you're going for a more organic look.

Hi Niel! No silly of course not, but I always love your ideas! I found a Cathy waterman leaf style that I love (not sure how to post it or if that's allowed?) so I brought it to GOG - waiting for the initial cad drawings but so far just have the price.

Your current (hopefully, soon to be former :naughty: ) ring has really lovely tab prongs - might be a sweet little homage to your former ring to have your new one have the same?

Awe you almost made me cry a little!!!

In a good way that is !!

Oh absolutely allowed. Post away! I love setting ideas :naughty:

At the bottom of the box for typing a response there's a tab that says "upload attachment"
Just save the pic to your computer and upload it there.

Thanks Niel!!

RR-I didn't want to take over your other thread by answering on there lol.

We picked the stone at GOG this week-it was between two but only one had the longer ratio so the decision was fairly easy!
It is 8.04 x 5.32 x 3.31, VVS2, I and 1.51 ratio. Really beautiful. I cannot say enough good things about Charlie at GOG, seriously the man is incredibly patient, kind, honest and knowledgable. It is very difficult to find a well cut longer ratio apparently but this one fit the bill.

Now, onto the setting. I love diamond leaf designs like cathy waterman and Jeff Cooper and have a quote for a custom because I haven't found exactly what I want. I feel a little nervous to make a decision because I really want to love this ring forever (I know that's a long time lol).

Any ideas, advice or suggestions are always welcomed. I really appreciate everyone's advice thus far.

Sounds lovely AD! Post cads when they arrive
