I am about half way with Single Stone setting an early modern round brilliant (Dreamer D)/transitional (per Heather) and was curious-
bezel or no, gallery to let light in or not so much? What will help this stone perform best? The table is 57% and the cut grade is good already, I'm just trying to make the best decisons. Culet is medium which in real life isn't that big. flowery fat petal center with snowflake outline at edges...hmmm.

I think I was wearing a purple shirt-

Hmm. I like bezels in general, what setting are you going to get?

Have you taken a day to go around with it an look at it sitting on/in some settings, even if it's not a setting style you are considering?

Mostly, I'd want to spend some time trying to find out what suits it best...bezel or not, prongs or not, enclosed gallery or not, etc....There are varying opinions on bezeling old stone, regarding darkening of the center, and I'd want to have lots of info before deciding on a setting and I'd let the stone dictate the setting.

I agree with bastetcat in that if you are not sure how the stone might look in different settings is to try duplicating the environment of the setting (if that makes any sense lol-long day at work!) to see how it might make the stone look. For example, if you want to bezel it try putting it in a bezel and see if it darkens the facets or just gives them more depth which might be cool. It is hard to visualize sometimes how a stone might look in a specific setting so if you could somehow try it out first that would be ideal.

Pretty diamond!!!

Does the thinness of the culet warrant the additional protection that a bezel affords? Or is it thick enough that prongs will be sufficient?

Someone once told me to make a bezel out of tin foil around my stone and see what that does to it

Nielseel, I like bezels too. They protect these old stone thinner girdles and look appropriate to the era. I was thinking of two sanguine hearts 2nd setting as far as the shank, and bezeling or semi-bezeling the stone if possible.

Bastecat, I sent the stone to them already. I do have one photo of it sitting in a vintage twin stone that I debated having turned into a single stone setting but decided against it and went custom instead.

Missy, thank you. I'm glad you like it. You know, I guess maybe they could put it in a few settings just to see, that is if they have any just "laying" around

Chrono, it says on the GIA report that it is 3% and slightly thin-thick. It is bruted. I could polish or facet it up? How will that affect performance?

I like the idea of it in an sort of Edwardian basket type setting (6 prong type thing), but I have a strong lean toward antiques. If they'd be willing to pop in in a few possible settings for you with pics, and maybe give their opinion as well as to what might look right, that might be good since they already have the stone in hand.

I do wonder as well how it would do in a bezel too...could be interesting!

I think your diamond will really look great in an enclosed mounting of some sort. Either a bezel or a basket gallery that encloses the pavilion. It will really up the contrast oomph and make the stone perform at its best. My own diamond looks much more chunky and delicious set in my mount than it looked loose. And I think extra contrast is a good thing.

Okay, think I found a great combo of ring elements and now need to get a cut tweak. Is Jeweler's Mutual the best way to go? My insurance does not cover anything apart from a loss.
