So I already have a diamond and am in search of a ring. I think I found one I like online, but I don''t feel comfortable sending my diamond to them to have it set in that ring. I was thinking I could purchase the ring and then find some local store to set it for me. Does anyone know if this is something that is common? Will a store set it for me even though I am not buying a ring from them? How much is it usually to set a ring?

Thanks

you might have a hard time finding jeweler whom you didn''t purchase the stone from, set it into a setting you didn''t purchase from them either. even if they will do it, they probably will not take responsibility for the stone if it''s damaged while they are setting it. What setting is it, is it a designer ring? I know shipping jewelry is nerve wreaking and scary but shipping USPS registered mail is very, very safe. It''s honestly best if the designer sets the stone anyway. we''ve heard so many stories on here when local jewelers have messed up designer setting by setting stones into them themselves. you certainly can call around some of your local jewelers and ask them if they would do it though.

For sure local jewlers will set diamonds in rings, no doubt. I inquired last week in a local brick and mortar and they told me $150-$275 depending on prongs, size, etc. I dont know if that is cheap or expensive, but is what they told me. I have read other posts here where people bought online and then had settings done locally such as you are thinking about. Good Luck.

Becareful when you are doing this, some B&M jeweler switches your diamond (I have heard some horrible stories). Choose only the jeweler you can trust. Safe bet would be to let whoever helping you online to set the stone for you so it is ready to wear when it reaches you. Good luck!!!

Please tell me you are joking. The amount of damage swiping a diamond could do to a B&M''s shop would be devastating.

There have been recent posts about this happening to people.

While it is DEFINITELY true that most reputable business would NOT do this. Not every business is reputable. And it isn''t easy to prove that a place did this.

ANY jeweler you go to should be checked out with the BBB, the state attorney general''s office, and the jewelers cousel.

I would do one of two things: Depending on the clarity of your stone you can do a spot check yourself AT the jeweler, and ask them to note identifying inclusions you both spot together on the sheet they do the intake on. Then check it after you have the ring, again with the jeweler and against the intake sheet to see if you can spot them. That way you can confirm that if anything is different, the swap must have happened while at the jeweler. The other thing you can do is go to a place that will set it while you wait. Some places will do this.

As has been stated, most jewelers won''t insure your diamond during the setting process if you have not bought the diamond from them.

Used to be many jewelers didn't want to set a stone they didn't sell into a setting they didn't sell. But with the economy the way it is, I am guessing that will change. They have to make a buck right?? Anyway as Gypsy said, go over the plot of your diamond when it's taken in. Go over it carefully. And then sign the receipt. And upon picking up the ring, go over it again, making sure it matches up.

Jewelers are not going to risk their reputations swapping stones. It's a very rare thing for sure. But best to be safe,,,,,

If I have a GIA or AGS inscription I will be able to tell if they switched it after the setting right? Also, I''m going to watch them like dogs (if they let me) to make sure there is no foul play involved.......

I know I should be careful about the jeweler swapping stones, but how would you be able to do this if you did buy a ring from an online vendor and were to have them set it? Or if you did buy the ring from the store and have them set it?

I am in the chicagoland area, so if anyone does know a reputable jeweler, please post.

Thanks for all the responses

Oh and to respond to mrsalvo, here is the setting I found, however, she wants a princess cut in the kite setting, so I would think the prongs need to be modified to accomodate. I have no idea if it is designer or not, I found it on this website http://www.diamondsbyeyal.com/Default.aspx

Dimend Scassi is well regarded here and I believe they are in your area. I also know there are some Chicago-ans on the boards so you might want to post a new thread for jeweler recommendations in the area!

Kaleigh brings up a good point that you might find someone to do it based on the economy but please make sure the stone is insured or that the jeweler will take responsibility for it while it''s being set. Princess stones are more likely to chip while being set so that should be a concern as well. the setting you posted looks like a stock setting so you can probably find it many places. I would highly recommend getting the setting and stone from the same place if possible. Dimend Scassi is local and a pricescope vendor so you could get a stone and setting from him while keeping with the competitive online pricing. Also, Pearlmans is a couple house drive from chicago and are located in Battle Creek, MI. they have an amazing selection of e-rings and would be worth the drive if you''re up for a road trip.

The thing is I already have the stone. So I will and have been searching for a similar ring at local stores so I can purchase the ring and have it set at the same place, but am having some what troubles.

I am still curious, what does everyone else do when they purchase a stone online? I cannot imagine everyone also purchases the ring from the same vendor...

Many people purchase both at one place.

Many people also purchase them from different places and have one vendor send the other peice to the other. So the diamond vendor might send the diamond to the setting vendor, or the setting vendor might send the setting to the diamond vendor. Just depends.

Others will buy the diamond online and the setting locally, and have the vendor they purchased the setting from set the diamond. Or if it''s a designer setting the setting vendor will send the diamond in to the designer to have the diamond set by them.

And some do things the way you are planning.

Just depends.

since you already have the diamond then I think it would be a good idea to find a local vendor to purchase the setting from and have them set the stone. you might also consider taking a picture in of the ring you are wanting. Jewelers don''t always stock every setting but can often times get them in.
