While AGS was working on the standards for AGS0 cut grade Paul contacted them and asked if champhering would be allowed. (I hope I am spelling this correctly.) Champhering is the placing of tiny facets where the sharp corners would be. These can be practically invisible to the eye, but make a MAJOR difference in the breakability of the stone.

Peter Yanzer said he would take it to the board, and champhers will indeed be allowed on the princess AGS 0 cut grades. These are not to be confused with the much larger cut corners that are NOT covered in the AGS cut grading at this time. My hat is off to Paul for asking and for Pete Yanzer agreeing to take it to the board and to the board for recognizing the validity of the request!

Paul has been working on bringing an AGS 0 cut grade princess to market for more than a year now, thank goodness for the setters that he covered all the bases!

Hi Wink,

Just a quick note to put this more in perspective.

In fact, chamfering is a technique that the best cutters of princess-cuts in Antwerp have been using as a standard these last years.

When cutting our first princess-cuts for AGS-0 however, it was unclear how this technique was foreseen in the new AGS-system, especially with regards to their grade on symmetry. When I asked them, they had in fact already prepared a proposition to the board, which later got accepted.

Therefore, you can thank me for putting the chamfers, but with or without me, AGS would have allowed the technique anyway.

Live long,

I must have been confused with all that was going on, I could have sworn that Peter told the group that you were the one who asked.

Oh well, I stand corrected about it being your "fault", but I am still very glad that it is being allowed.

I remember CutNut talking about putting facets on the corners of princess cut diamonds last year.

Yes, it has been a practice for some time, I was excited that AGS agreed to allow it for thier AGS 0 cut grades.
