I wonder if you could put a fat pear in the JM1345?? I''ve only ever seen a round/cushion. THAT would be SWEET!

Honey, look into ovals and pears. Lower price per carat and good with spread. In a halo. You''ll get what you need. What''s your total budget for the whole thing? And what is your color tolerance?

I was thinking about a pear actually. I really didn''t like them so much, but they have grown on me. I also like halos, but I don''t like too much sparkle. I''m thinking the budget is $5,000 - but bf is hinting at more? We''ll see. I like yellow and white gold and I think I am pretty tolerant of warmer stones. Pushing the limit is that GOG 1.74 ''O'' diamond, set in yellow gold, but I would have to see if that dark of a color bothers me.

If you don''t like halos, maybe a thick-ish bezel? Something like LTP''s?

$5,000 can get you a very lovely ring...maybe you can even use the stones from the original band you bought 15 years ago?

I have very large hands, so I definitely understand your pain! I do think you can find something you love in your budget!

Elegant, you totally qualify for the colored stone stimulus plan.
Get thee to Colored Stones!
I agree! I think that''s where I might be "theeing" myself to go!!! Thanks!

The $1,000 is not a 'for sure' gift from PS. When a poster reaches 10,000 posts, the administrators look at the person, and their contributions, and if they have made a significantly positive impact to the board, they may offer a thank you gift to that poster. When I say 'positive' it is not that they posted 10,000 'Oh how pretty' posts but that they took the time to share the knowledge that they have gained with regard to diamonds, colored stones, etc. They helped new members increase their knowledge base. Helped others find stones with educated, constructive comments delivered in a kind manner that encourages all members to learn rather than discourages them.

This is in no way related to their personal purchases. For all I know, some may have never purchased a diamond (although I doubt it) let alone from a known vendor. But they love diamonds enough to go beyond the ordinary to learn about diamonds, the science, the math, the art, the beauty and they share that knowledge with anyone that cares enough to ask.

Elegant, I'm not suggesting that your posts have not been helpful and positive to all. I'm just trying to give a little insight into what I think has been done in the past.

Admin, if I have this wrong, or am out of line with trying to explain your generous gifts, please do feel free to delete my response. Thanks!
Hey! Oh, I know - it isn't a for sure and I wouldn't expect that. The people here who have gotten the gifts have been truly helpful and have totally earned it. They have been very thoughtful and thought provoking... I try to contribute as much as my schedule allows me to and I guess my knowledge is very much limited. That's okay. I have no expectations. I like to come here and help out and read as much as I can. Thanks!

Check out this link if you want an idea for a warm oval diamond with lots of finger coverage. I don''t really know what your style is, but a lot of vintage rings have double halos which = lots of coverage. I wear a 9.5 ring so I feel your pain. I know you like tourmalines too, and they have a couple pretty ones on Fay Cullen:

example

example 2

Here is another oval diamond, this time with sapphires (you could always recreate this without the sapphires):

http://faycullen.com/rings/800/f529r1ds.html

Doesn''t that look huge for 1.28 cts?
Those are just a few ideas, good luck!

Thanks! I visit that site often and drool! I like the pink tourmaline one. I know lots of people who have bad experiences purchasing from that site. I see what you mean with the 1.28 ct ring - it does look big! Thanks for pointing those out.

I think if you decide to go with diamonds, an eternity band or 7-stone band could be AMAZING with that budget!
Hi Lilac,
I have been contemplating a very delicate eternity band actually. Hmmm, a 7-stone? I''ll have to look into that option. Thank you for your ideas!

I called Jim for a quote awhile back because this is my DREAM setting (the 1345) for the future when I get around to getting engaged/married. I wanted an idea of what it was going to cost so that I could best discuss with FF the budget for stone vs. setting, etc. He didn''t say that information was private so I don''t mind sharing my experience, however, if you''re interested the current pricing would be best asked of him. He is very nice!!

He quoted me 18k gold (white plated or unplated, yellow, rose, etc) with platinum wraps and bezel $1200, all platinum $1800.

Good luck!
Wow, thank you for responding. That is actually not too bad. I love that setting. My bf was like - why is it so expensive if there aren''t any diamonds or anything on the band itself? He doesn''t get jewelery at all...at all...

Thanks so much for the info, I really appreciate it!!

I was wondering that too yesterday! How funny is that? I wonder what that would look like? Hmmm....

That''s what I told bf I wanted to do, he wants me to leave it alone and not do anything with it. I guess I am being selfish, but I want a very stunning ring! You know what I mean?
3.gif
Champagne taste on a beer budget, right?
11.gif
No, you are right, $5,000 isn''t too bad and I will be able to find something that I love. He said he wants to pick out the ring...that''s the scariest thing I think I could''ve heard coming from his mouth! I''ve been trying to show him what I like, where to get it, and trying to educate him every chance I get. He''ll get me what I want, even if it is above the budget. Thanks NewEnglandLady!

Alternately... ask Jon if he can find something like this but with no bowtie... Look Ma, I''m 9 x 6 (hello finger coverage) and I''m only 3K! http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4909/ Then I''d just do a simple tapered baguette setting in white gold and be done with it.
Oooohhhhhh, that would be nice. I like that idea a lot actually!

This one has promise from JA:
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Pear-Diamond-1232167.asp 8 x 6
Thanks for pointing me into this direction!

And any of these settings would be lovely with in.

I like this setting with the diamonds on the side. Third favorite from these that you listed!

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/ring/item_58-869.asp
This one is my favorite from the ones you listed. I like this one even more because it has baguettes on the sides. I like baguettes.

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/White-Gold-Engagement-Ring.html
This is my second favorite...it looks so delicate.

If you want a white diamond I''d go with the pear.

If you can handle some warmth... I''d go with that Infinity in a James Meyer.
Thank you , thank you, thank you!!! Lots of beautiful options in my price range - who knew?

Elegant, have you looked at Pearlman''s? He gets some beautiful consignment pieces that might "fit" (pun intended - haha) what you are looking for. There are a lot of choices to look at in his pre-owned, closeouts, and estate pieces. This one comes in at $7,000 even so is over your expected budget but it does buy a lot of ring...

Or this one is from Signed Pieces at $3,500... Can you tell I have yet to master posting multiple photos in a post??

Hi elegant - just fyi,
not sure if the expensive opinion was just your BF''s, but that setting is very reasonable.
Jim''s quote to me was the cheapest from any jeweller (including two PS vendors), for a very similiar design (all metal, bezel, no side stones). Plus, it''s all handmade - imho actually worth a premium over CAD and cast.

Just thought I''d add some perspective, as you can let BF know for a setting such as that in 18k to expect at least 1500 usually (custom, not stock).

Oh, yeah, I agree, and yes, it was just BF's opinion...he knows nothing and I have been researching so I have a good sense - he was the first one to tell me - Elegant, I know nothing about jewelry, you're gonna have to tell me what the prices are and how much things are - I told him it was a good price, etc., especially custom handmade...I totally get it, he doesn't. He'll get the idea...once I show him comparables. Thanks AJ...

Yeah, I will have to look at Pearlman''s, definitely. I''ve browsed the site a few times but will consider it more now.

I emailed Jim at JM about the pear and he said it wouldn''t look good in the 1345 setting because he tried...but he offered an alternative if I did choose to purchase a pear... So that''s good to know at least...

Elegant, I TOTALLY feel you! As you know I have my diamond now but until it landed it was all I could think about.
I think you should start somewhere - anywhere - but make sure it is upgradeable.

Hi LaraOnline!
Start somewhere...that''s actually quite liberating...I think getting him to that point in the first place is a big hurdle. Thanks for the upgradable advice. I will also keep that in mind. Thanks!
