I am considering purchasing this old transitional cut but would like some feedback. It is uncerted so I would want to send it to GIA, right? These are the stats provided by the seller who says it was "sold to her by a gemologist" and these were her estimations. And can anyone take a guess at whether $8000 is a reasonable price?

Size: 2.02 carats
Color: Q-R
Clarity: VS1
8.47*8.43*4.59mm
Depth: 54.3%
Table: 53.2%

I am also considering this diamond and am waiting on a video from the seller if you care to share opinions on either!

'Sold to her by a gemologist' means nothing at all. Whether or not her estimates are reliable is 100% on your estimation of her. That doesn't make her wrong, of course, but take the statement for what it's worth.

Be aware that GIA will only grade unmounted stones. If you're going to go that path, have HER take it out of the setting so there are no issues of who caused any damage that may be present. Also be aware that GIA is a bit slow these days. If the sale is going to be contingent on their results, make sure she's ok with the turnaround time and work out in advance who will be responsible for the shipping fees if it doesn't grade out the way you/she are hoping.

Here are a few videos of the transitional:

and

I am awaiting a video on the old mine. The old mine would be sold as a loose stone an would be $5000 but I am eager to see the light return on it since it is shallow, as you mentioned. I also inquired about the 6-7 o'clock position and they said it was just the camera and that nothing was there. We'll see how the video looks....

The transitional would be sent to me as is and I would have my jeweler unmount it to be sent. I would sell the platinum setting separately.

Can you help me understand how the grading would affect the price? For example, if GIA says it is darker color/lower clarity I would have no idea how much to ask off the price. Can you help me understand that? Or would you not even bother with sending it and just have it appraised for insurance purposes and move on? I don't ever plan to sell it - this is my once in a lifetime upgrade :p

Thank you!

The transitional looks like a big flatty in the videos and pics. Barely any crown height and a shallow stone. Not a particularly great combination. The stone you linked from Adam yesterday was a much nicer cut.

excellent feedback! What about the Old Mine?

I missed your reply on that stone Adam sent until just now. You know, I am not wild about the yellow color from the side so I passed on it. I agree the transitional looks flat. They are asking $5000 for the old mine which seems like a good deal (but not if it's not a nice stone lol)

Since your budget went up.... How about this one. It's not 2 cts but its a beautiful bright Diamond.

There are also two pears now listed on her site in your budget if you are still considering pears.

Lol not by that much, the $8000 transitional included the platinum mounting :p That first pear she sold is the only one I have loved so far. Does the old mine video tell you anything else about it? Is it terrible? Over priced at $5000?

I'm not one of the experts. Sorry! I just have more confidence in Grace or Adam than Ebay unless you are an expert.

I thought it was really pretty.

Which one Gypsy?

I think if the stone you posted yesterday from OWD isn't to your liking because of the yellow from the side....you might want to reconsider a stone purchase that is in the Q-R range.

I thought it was lovely but I do prefer it to be uniform color. So if that has been yellow from the top too I would have gone for it!

The OMC is even more shallow and flatter on top than the transitional. Antique Cushions and Old mine cuts should be much deeper than that stone.

Adam didn't film the stone top down, but what you are saying about uniform in colour isn't making sense. Most stones show more colour from the side than they do top down. If it is a Q/R stone and it is tinted very pale yellow and you put it into a yellow bezel or cup it will still look very pale yellow....

I think the photos above are deceptive, they make it look like an often sort after arrowed tranny when in fact if you look at the very last still pic above and the videos you can see it lacks an alarming amount of depth. Very flat crown and no substance to the lower half. Flatties or really shallow stones are not as bright and don't have as much fire as a fat arrowed transitional or a deeper cut OEC. These types of stones IMHO are bright in sunshine and under jewellery shop lights and average to poor performers every where else.

I guess the bonus is it is spready looking - have you seen it in person or can you see it in person easily?

I can't see it without purchasing it unfortunately. The Old Mine has a great return policy so I guess I could always see it and return. Sorry I didn't make sense, I am a noob and trying to swim as fast as I can with the big fish :)

That other one Adam sent me, come to find out, is out of my budget. Which I didn't realize until after I posted that video :( I do really like stones with color to them and I guess I was thrown by it looking very white from the top and very yellow at the sides. He is sending me stones next week to look at. His videos make it very hard to tell.

So can I get a resounding response about that Old Mine? Is it garbage? It is shallow for an Old Mine so I guess that isn't great. Forgive me for asking so much (I have read TONS of the forums on here, I promise) I just really value the input as I hope to make a good decision. I have a thin skin though so please don't be too harsh :) I thought it looked pretty and I liked the shape.

The Old Mine is WAY too shallow forget about it. The transitional is too shallow too but better looking then the OMC. Did you email Grace and ask her what is coming back from Miami with her? And what Erica is getting in new because she is also currently low on stock and will probably be buying stock as well. This is what you are paying them more for - they handpick their stock so they eliminate the dud performers to a degree.

yes I have been emailing with both of them. Grace didn't find me anything in Miami but has friends looking in Tucson for me. Erica has more stock coming in next week and has her eyes out too. It sure is hard to be patient when you are ready to buy! I have two stones on the way from Adam next week so we'll see what those look like.

Just for the sake of my own education, here are two more videos that were sent to me of the Old Mine. It doesn't sparkle much as much as I expected it would and I assume that is due to the shallow depth of it?
