Posting here for traffic if that''s okay.

Um... got my gold in hand. Ready to turn it into a diamond bangle. Now, um. Where to sell it. Should I call around first and see what the jewelers say? I think I should.

Um... Dancing Fire, any recommendations in Northern, CA?

Any of our PS vendors buy gold? I might just prefer to deal with them, even if it means mailing the stuff insured and registered.

Gypsy...i would call GOG. i'm pretty sure Jon buy/sell bullion in his shop,so if that were the case he should buy your scrap gold too. if i was still in the rare coin business i would buy it from you

Perfect. I''ll give him a call. Thanks DF!

Just for fun, have you thought of listing a YG piece or two for sale and seeing if you can get more than scrap price? (Also can''t wait to see the bangle!)

Is 15% off fine gold trading price a good deal?

Seems to be. Just called a local 'pawn' shop and they said they can only do 40%

yes,if you meant the melt content? did you talk to Jon?

I'm on the phone with Jon now, trying to figure out what is best to do. That number was from a local appraiser who 'facilitates' transactions.

I don't know if it's off the melt content. Want to call her an grill her for me? (925) 939-4367 Nancy Stacy. I didn't know what terminology to use and what questions to ask.

I have thought of that. But on the other hand... I'd have to get it appraised to do that, reliably. And that costs money too. So... not really sure I want to do that, ya know.

I'm kind of an instant gratification type girl, unless I think I'm not getting a good price. Then... I'll re-think.

gypsy, I''m pretty sure Pearlmans will buy gold too so you might give Bill a call.

Ahh, didn''t know that. Okay, that''s great information. Thanks MsSalvo!

Gypsy...do you know how many ounces or grams of gold that you are trying to sell? if yes, then i can calculate the melt value base on today''s N.Y. spot price.

I went to someone who was a great jeweler and opened up one of these sell your gold places. I know his daughter, know the family...

I went in with the most pathetic pieces, nothing great and many mis matched....

I was thinking in my head $400....

I walked out with $1359!!!!!!

This was stuff I haven''t worn since the 80''s!!!

When he gave me the quote, I tried to contain my excitement...

I''d look around, there are places that are paying a fair amount and those looking to take advantage of you.

Hi DF, my biggest problem is not knowing what the karat weight of some of the gold is. The appraiser said she'd test it for me.

I was at a friends who has a metric scale for baking and I think I have one troy ounce of 18k and one of unknown-- but probably 22K... it's high carat, but the marks are in arabic or farsi and TINY and I can't get a read on them. And I have one gold coin... no clue what the mix is, or how heavy it is... it's about the size of a nickle but thinner than a nickle. I also have another troy ounce of unknown high karat (actually a couple grams over) but I've decided not to sell that.

So... it's kind of a pot luck. If I had a scale here I'd know better what I have, but I don't have one.

Kaleigh, that's awesome. Nice bang for your buck! Two of mine are sets, but I don't think that's going to matter much. Still, I think it would be lovely if they found a home instead of being melted.

I just saw a PS ad re: David Atlas buying estate pieces & gold I think.

Huh, who knew. I'll give him a call tomorrow. That way I'll know what everyone is offering and I'll be able to make up my mind. I'd just like my new shiny. I'm so excited about out with the old in with the new.

Thanks Deco!

Gypsy...here''s my advise
take your gold to a pawn shop but don''t sell it ,cuz they''ll try to rip you off big time
14.gif
just ask them to weight the gold after separating the 18kt from the 22kt,you can then calculate the gold value, now you''ll know the value when you decide to sell to whom ever.

btw; write the weight down on a piece of paper for future use.

Will do DF. :-) If I can get my husband to go with me. The closest thing to a pawn shop where I live is not in a good neighborhood and I honestly would just feel weird going there with a bunch of jewelry on me. There is a jeweler who buys gold (at a ridiculous price) near me, and that will probably be a much safer bet.

Also see if Wink is interested, but 15% back of actual gold content value is a pretty good offer.

Watch out, the pawn shop will try to list a few things as being less than what they are, especially if they are not marked in a ''typical'' way.

Okay so, I have it on consignment with Nancy''s dealer. I will get a call on Monday to see what the offer is for sure. But in the meantime, everything has been tested and weighed. Monday''s gold price is what the offer will be based on.

38 grams of 22K
38.9 grams of 18K
4 grams of 16-17K
5.8 grams of 14K
4.1 grams of 22K in one coin.

My husband wants me to hold of on the bangle buying with the money, and to put it into savings and add to it, so that I can get the 3 ctw bangle I really want, instead of settling for a lower carat weight one. Not sure what I am going to do. But really glad i am selling the stuff. Gives me a good feeling. I didn''t sell too much, I held back some, but the piecies I really knew I wasn''t going to ever wear, I took in to her.

Gypsy...based on today''s N.Y. spot price of $1127.40 per oz.

here is the melt value of your gold.

38 grams of 22K = $1262.36
38.9 grams of 18K= $1057.69
4 grams of 16-17K=$96.68
5.8 grams of 14K=$122.67
4.1 grams of 22K in one coin. =$136.20

the total melt value = $2615.60

4.1 grams of 22K in one coin.
What kind of coin? it may be worth more than the gold content.

not if it had been use for jewelry. i have an 1881 $5 gold piece on top of my desk that i'm gonna sell for $20 over melt.

Thanks DF. Let''s hope the price of gold stays the same through Monday, or goes up or only a little bit down, then. According to your calculations I should get about 2200 for the gold. I can live with that. You''ve been a GREAT help DF, I really mean it, and I really appreciate it. Maybe one of these days, I''ll get you the 10 bucks I owe you, eh?

that sounds fair. keep in mind that the buyer won't be able to fetch melt value for your jewelry.

go to Micky D's and have a $10 lunch on me.

hey Gypsy, got some infor for ya...

i just got back from a coin show where i sold a $5 gold piece to an elderly gentleman from Millbrae,Ca name "Joe Wargo". i asked Joe how much he''ll pay for scrap gold and he said...up to 92% of melt, maybe you should give him a call since he''s close to your area.

Wow 92% of melt and close by. I find out Nancy''s buyer''s offer on Monday. I''ll give Joe a call too to ask him what he can offer me, and take it from there. Hope you got a great offer for your coin. THANK YOU AGAIN DF!

Oh and I had lunch for two days on you. I''m a cheap date.

i got melt ($265) for my $5 gold piece,b/c it had been use as a jewelry piece.in all honesty i knew that''s all its worth.

then i talk to a coin dealer friend of mine,he said...dealers can get up to 98% of melt for scrap gold.he also said...you know we need to pay for an assay test before we can sell it,right? true!!
2.gif

Sounds like you got a good deal, DF. Nancy''s dealer came in higher than I thought... apparently he doesn''t melt it all, if some of the pieces are re-sell worthy he gives a higher precentage... and I have a full set of gold that was brand new and very lovely (though not my style). So... I sold it and should have the money pretty soon. Now I of course, need to determine what I am putting it toward. But I am happy. Especially about the gold my father''s mother gave me. It was tainted for me, and I am glad to have the funds going toward something else.
