Hi all,

I have finally decided on this diamond for my gf. Its 1.15 carat round billiant / H / SI1 / Triple Ex / No fluorescence. This jeweler told me that it is guaranteed to be eye-clean and will not be cloudy/milky. If so, I may change it notwithstanding that he had ordered and paid for it for me.

In all, I paid US$7486.00 (inclusive of tax and shipping). Did I overpay?

I want a contemporary setting that shows a lot of the diamond. Somehow my gf likes prongs that are thick and/or squarish. Can anyone suggest?

What should I do when the diamond arrives? Though my jeweler is reputable and had been engaged by my colleagues, what can I do to make sure that the diamond is the one I had ordered and has no problems?

Using the PS diamond search, looking for 1.14-1.16 ct GIA XXX H Si1 with Faint/No fluorescence, there are 34 diamonds ranging in price from $5744-$8118. The median is $7200

If you do the search function on pricescope, there are 12 Round diamonds with your exact perimeters ranging in price from $5,744 to $8,118.

Have you punched your numbers into the HCA tool to see what type of score you get? https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca

Any score under 2 should be a safe bet.

FYI I just ran the tool on your GIA report and got the following...

Factor Grade
Light Return Very Good
Fire Good
Scintillation Good
Spread
or diameter for weight Very Good
Total Visual Performance 4.1 - Good - Only if price is your main criterion

I would honestly look for a better diamond based on this score. I'm sure the experts here can chime in and suggest a few options.

Are you within the return period?

I am glad that I paid somewhere close to median price (per US market). Reason is that I am in Singapore and prices tend to be significantly higher.

I know that the HCA score is above 2 when I ordered it. And this is one aspect I am not sure. Some people (especially on this forum) swear by it. Some jewelers tell me that its not a relevant standard for them as its a totally different standard that may not have an impact on physical appearance of the rock. There is a jeweler in Singapore that swears by it and brainwashes its clients that its the end all and be all. In fact, this jeweler would charge substantially for a stone scoring 1.8 and a very similar stone scoring 1.3. I am not decided on this. Perhaps others can share their views.

The diamond is actually specially brought in from a cutter / wholesaler based in the USA. On this basis, I am not able to return it unless it looks milky, not eye clean or unusual for other reasons.

So you can't return it then. If so, what sort of setting are you looking for? We can help you.

You mentioned a jeweler who believes in the HCA. Did you buy from this jeweler? Actually he charged a premium on stones scoring below 2 as they are better cut. Better cut diamonds command a premium to begin with as cutters spend more time on them.

I did not buy from that jeweler who promotes the HCA. From my research, his price will be in the region of 11,000 to 14,000 USD for a 1.15 carat diamond. Yes, quite pricey.

I hope to find a setting with thick prongs that are less rounded. Further, the gallery of the ring should not be blocked so that the diamond can be seen.
