Charlize,

Strictly speaking, this is outside the parameters you set (2 Options). I apologize, in advance for that. But if I may suggest an Option C:

Crystal72384's 3.64ct L VS1 AVOEC (August Vintage Old European Cut)

I am not a gemologist, or any kind of expert in diamonds. I have never seen an ACA or an antique OEC in real life, nor have I seen Crystal72384s 3.64ct (or Crystal72384) IRL, but I have gotten 5 MRBs from an internet vendor, and subsequently 3 AVOECs from GOG, for my wife, in the last 3 years (albeit <1ct each).

While the light performance of the MRBs merely exceeded anything I've seen in local BMs, the performance of my wife's AVOECs convinced me they must have hidden batteries in the settings somewhere, even though I can't find them and both Jonathan and Stephanie at GOG assure me they haven't. To me, the AVOECs look that good. Just my $0.02, your mileage may vary.

Hi marksbcss,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts...

Is Crystal72384's 3.64ct L VS1 AVOEC (August Vintage Old European Cut) listed anywhere? I can't seem to find it on GOG's website.

Look again. I added it to my original reply. Also Jonathan@GOG has a youtube video of it. I don't know if I'm allowed to post the URL. You can search youtube for:
3.64 L VS1 august vintage. One point, they did a video of my wife's AVOECs aka AVRs... In real life, they look better. I think the lights in California may be different than lights on Long Island. Sunlight too.

Crystal72384 has put some other posts up. Check:

Check page 1 also.

Hi Charlize,

To answer your question as asked...

First, I am not an expert, but I know what I like, and I read a lot. That said...

Option A: The antique OEC was not designed for light performance, and the cutter didn't have the tools, or the knowledge, we have today. At the time, the goal was maximum weight. While some antique OECs may have very good light performance (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=t7L4K2X6r6M), they appear to be the exception rather than the rule. It's unlikely most will outshine a modern well designed and correctly cut MRB. On the other hand, they are each unique and have 'charm', history, and their fire is a different flavor from that of a MRB. That is why those that buy them do.

Option B: The ACA is designed around light performance. The ASET, H&A, AGS document and photos tend to indicate the light performance should be superior.

Think of it as paintings vs photographs (with the possible exception of a Vermeer*).

Now as the Option C I suggested shows, there are modern proprietary takes on the OEC cut that are designed and cut for light performance. Jonathan Weingarten's August Vintage is one (that I've seen), Victor Canera's Canera European Cut is another (that I have not seen IRL). There may be others. If light performance in an OEC flavor is what you want, look there.

Ideally, you would like to see, IRL, the ACA and OEC in a tray, next to each other, in lighting environments you expect to find yourself. Then pick whichever you like more!

In practice, you will probably have to decide based only on the information currently on the websites. Since you are probably already familiar with MRBs, I would concentrate on the pictures and movies of the OEC. If you like what you see, and feel you can live with it for years, get it. You'll have a one of a kind ring. It probably won't be the brightest on the block. But no one else will have one exactly like it. If you don't feel that way, you'll probably be happier with the ACA.

Mark

OEC or AVR for me. But I don't like MRB's much, and certainly not ones over 3 carats.

Thank you Gypsy...I love the chunky facets of OEC or AVR, but have to come to terms with the fact that I wouldn't be able to accept too much color/tint in a stone.
