Many thanks to the site and the advice provided here -- I've been reading for months as part of the process in educating myself on purchasing a diamond.

I've worked with a variety of jewelers in the area, as well as shopped online. I think I've found the right diamond, but I'd greatly appreciate feedback to see if there is anything I'm missing.

The statistics:
GIA / D / 1.63 carats / SI1 / Triple Ex cut / medium blue fluorescence
Table: 59%, depth: 59.1%, crown: 32 degrees, pavilion: 41 degrees
7.71 x 7.73 mm x 4.56 mm
After several weeks of negotiating, I've got the price at $17,600.

I've looked at several dozen SI1, and to my untrained eye, this is one of the cleanest SI1 stones I've seen. The jeweler tells me that, in his view, this should be a VS2, but of course hard to know how much puffery is involved. (Apparently, he's decided that he's going to buy it for his stock, if I don't, rather than send it back to the cutter. Again, query if this is puffery or not.)

I hadn't originally planned to be at the "D" color, but over the course of shopping I was continually drawn to D & E stones. I appreciate that better value could be had with a lesser in color (outside ideal lighting and comparison contexts, it's not clear to me how much a "D" matters in the real world), but I kept coming back here nonetheless.

Is there anything that strikes one of concern as to this diamond? The jeweler is a big advocate of the 59% x 59% cut as a good mix of value, as it gives a fairly "spready" stone without (in his view) compromising performance in other ways. I've looked at many, and this one looks stunning to me, but I'm obviously far from an expert.

Many thanks for any advice. This is a daunting process given both the price tag as well as having absolutely no experience in buying such a diamond.

My first thoughts were...I would never buy such a high color grade and put it with an SI1 clarity grade....but that is me.

If you could post additional information, lab reports, Idealscope, picture images etc....You really can't determine from just some numbers. With what you have given it may be an ok diamond, but just need more info.

https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/60-60-proportioned-diamond What you have is called a 60/60 stone.

They have their fans. I like them personally, when they are backed by a good idealscope image. But many of them are flawed. Please read the above link carefully.

Key points: 40.2 and 41.2 degrees are likely to be worthy of consideration.

Your jeweler probably does not have an idealscope. You can buy one yourself for 25 bucks to verify performance to be truly safe.

to properly understand the link above on 60/60 stones you will need to read these two links as well.

That should give you enough information to make an informed and solid decision.

Many thanks for the response. The GIA report is attached. While I've seen the diamond on 4 or 5 trips, I don't have photos. And I don't think this jeweler is equipped to produce the sort of images that appear with the online sellers.

Thanks again.

I completely understand.

That's why I posted the link for you. So you could read and see what the idealscopes of 60/60 diamonds with different pavilion angles look like. Yours will look similar to the one that is closest to your pavillion angle.

And I posted the link to the idealscope information page so you could understand how to read the image. :-)

You CAN buy an idealscope for yourself. They are 25 bucks. http://www.ideal-scope.com/cart_zoom_item.asp?Id=2&ShowAdd=Y It is the safest thing to do.

Sorry Gypsy -- I was responding to C-K. Your advice is very well taken . In fact, I had already stumbled across those pages, and hoped I was in the right ballpark. But I wasn't sure if the numbers for the 60 x 60 held true for 59 x 59. You have informed me that the analysis is either the same or similar.

I had considered purchasing an idealscope based on the discussions here, but... well... I haven't gotten my head around the idea of showing up with such a device! Obviously, given the magnitude to me of this purchase, I should do everything possible to make sure I'm getting the right stone. So perhaps that should be my next step. Thank you again for the assistance; I appreciate it greatly.

Yup. 17k is nothing to sneeze at, as I am sure you are VITALLY aware.

There's nothing wrong with doing everything you can to ensure that the diamond is a good performer. A good jeweler will understand that.

Plus it's a fun toy. I have one and an ASET.

And you can always re-sell it on the preloved board here and someone will buy it from you if you don't want to keep it.
